Department Description


The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pharmaceutical services (prescriptions, unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical infusion pumps and teaching) throughout the Medical Center complex 24 hours per day. The Department is comprised of three inpatient and six outpatient pharmacies, a sterile production lab and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores and distribution.

Responsibilities

The Specialty Pharmacy technician is responsible for gathering information from medical records and other sources as required to process prior authorizations, patient assistance requests, and other ancillary task related to the operation of a Specialty Pharmacy program. Makes analysis of what further information needs to be collected to complete patient history. Makes recommendations to pharmacist based on protocols and data gathered. Communicates authorization requests to requesting parties. Assists with processing of prior authorization and patient assistance program requests. Maintains database of activities to document workload and impact on patient outcomes. Assists the discharge of patients and their transition to outpatient pharmacy services. Contacts patients on a monthly basis to ensure adherence to their medication regimen and to coordinate receival of prescription(s). Collaborates closely with clinic staff and other specialty pharmacy staff including management, clinical pharmacists, ancillary personnel and the dispensing staff.

Required Qualifications

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Recent work experience as a pharmacy technician
  • Knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law.
  • Recent working knowledge of insurance billing to Medicaid, Medicare B and D, and Third-Party plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nationally recognized Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) (i.e., PTCB)
  • Prior experience in a Health System Outpatient Pharmacy.
  • Prior experience working in a Specialty Pharmacy
  • Prior experience working for a Pharmacy Benefit Management company
  • Experience ensuring compliance of specialty pharmacy accrediting bodies (i.e. URAC, TJC, ACHC, etc.)
  • Experience in MS Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
  • Epic EMR, Epic Willow Ambulatory, specialty pharmacy case management systems and other clinical software experience
  • Working knowledge of the Prior Authorization and/or Patient Assistance Program process

Special Requirements

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
