Sojourners Care Network, a nonprofit organization rooted in Appalachian Ohio, empowers young people to become healthy, responsible, and productive citizens now and in the future.

We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic youth professionals with outstanding teaching skills to assist our YouthBuild of Southeast Ohio (YOSO) Team.

Type of Position: Part-time, on an as-needed basis. There is no minimum-hour guarantee with this position—hours will be determined by the staffing needs of the YouthBuild classroom. Potential exists for long-term and full-time positions.

Rate of Pay: $100.00 per day (no benefits)

Locations: Primary work location is Chillicothe, Ohio.

General Purpose: Sojourners’ YouthBuild of Southeast Ohio (YOSO) is a year-round, grant-funded job training and education program for young adults (ages 16-24) who have lacked success in traditional classrooms.

The YouthBuild Substitute Educator will be responsible for fostering academic success of young people engaged in internet-based GED and High School classes, teaching small groups, and tutoring individuals. They will also help plan educational activities, track students’ attendance and academic progress toward goals, and monitor academic testing.

Work Hours: Typical work hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Supervision: The YouthBuild Substitute Classroom Educator is directly supervised by Sojourners’ YouthBuild Program Director.

  • Create exciting educational and life skill groups
  • Document student interactions, struggles, and progress.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, families, administrators, and supportive community organizations.
  • Provide technical assistance to help students navigate online education platforms.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Education degree preferred; Teaching certification is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, motivational, and observational skills
  • Ability to work as a team or independently
  • Excellent verbal and written expression
  • Ability to teach groups of 3 – 20 individuals
  • Able to create and implement engaging lesson plans
  • Energetic, Focused, and Creative
  • Ability to establish a strong rapport with students, teachers, and administrators
  • Ability to multi-task and be on your feet for a few hours at a time.
  • Preferably one-year classroom management experience
  • Preferably one-year experience working with youth
  • Computer/technology experienced; Comfortable operating in a virtual environment using MS Office applications, cloud-based applications, database programs, and distance learning platforms and technologies is desired.
  • Adept at problem-solving computer, technology, and software issues for self and students.
  • Ability to pass Sojourners’ screening process, including drug screening and background checks.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure the safety of students.
  • Provide academic support to students individually and in small groups.
  • Prepare and/or follow clear and timely lesson plans.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of secondary school-level subject matter.
  • Promote an environment that is conducive to learning; provide instruction that supports the progression of learning for students.
  • Support the collection and usage of performance data.
  • Collect and record documentation as needed.
  • Observe ethics of the teaching profession.

Employment Screening: Employment with Sojourners Care Network is contingent upon successfully passing required background checks and drug screening. Offers of employment are not extended until screening results are received, which may take 2 to 4 weeks.
