The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.
This position is based at Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that receives direct supervision from a Biologist Supervisor. This position is responsible for the proper management of Pointe-aux-Chenes, Lake Boeuf, Salvador, Timken and Pass-a-Loutre WMAs and Queen Bess Refuge. These WMAs and refuge are highly dynamic coastal environments that provide habitat for a large diversity and abundance of resident and migratory wildlife. These areas are located in Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Charles, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes and consists of habitats ranging from swamp to brackish habitats. The selected candidate will assist with the daily operations of these WMAs and refuge including maintenance of facilities, equipment and grounds. Responsibilities of this position also include conducting field surveys, research projects, habitat development, user surveys, harvest surveys, and other techniques utilized in wildlife management. Other duties consist of assisting in oil and natural gas environmental regulation investigations and providing assistance to users of the WMAs and refuge. Additionally, the incumbent will be required, as needed, to respond to nuisance or injured wildlife calls, which often require after hours and weekend work. The incumbent may also be required to participate in aerial waterfowl surveys. The incumbent may also provide technical assistance to private landowners. The selected candidate will indirectly supervise multiple Technicians and one Technician Supervisor. Overnight travel for multiple days at remote areas and throughout Louisiana will be required. Working in the field, out of boats, at night and in inclement weather will also be required.
The Biologist position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and is advertised to be filled as a Biologist 1, 2 or 3. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation.
NOTE:
Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science, and agribusiness.
