Swiftwater Rescue Instructors at the Whitewater Center (Whitewater) provide Swiftwater and flood rescue training to public safety (Fire, EMA, Police) and military teams. This position is responsible for teaching a variety of classes including in-water, nighttime, and raft-based courses. Instructors must convey progressive and best-in-class techniques that enable program participants to save lives in emergency settings. Swiftwater Rescue Instructors are on-site, part-time employees that report to the Outdoor School Director.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Swiftwater, flood and boat-based instruction to groups with an informative and enjoyable approach while proactively managing the inherent risks involved with water rescue.
  • Provide constructive and meaningful feedback to students to foster skill development.
  • Engage in class planning sessions, utilize student-focused instruction techniques, and develop performance assessments.
  • Execute all safety and operational processes involved in Swiftwater rescue instruction for up to Class IV whitewater.
  • Practice thorough communication with the paddle sports team and aid where needed to ensure guest service standards and efficient operation across public-facing and instruction programs.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products and services offered by the Whitewater center.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Clear and professional communication skills including public speaking and demonstration.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience guiding or whitewater kayaking in up to class III whitewater.
  • Prior experience teaching or facilitating classes.
  • Prior participation in Swiftwater classes.
  • Instructor Course Requirements
  • Whitewater Level I and II Swiftwater and Flood Rescue Class
  • 5-day Instructor Candidate Course or Shadow Process
  • Whitewater guide safety check process
  • Current First Aid, CPR & AED Certification – courses are offered by the Whitewater Center.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during other Whitewater events as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in the fire or rescue field.
  • ACA Whitewater Swiftwater Instructor certification.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space.
  • Must be able to bend, lean, stand, and kneel on a regular basis and for sustained periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time and in all weather and environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to work in shared spaces with other employees and customers.
  • All positions at Whitewater require employees to report and work onsite at Whitewater locations.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to instruct in front of large groups for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Must be able to perform challenging maneuvers confidently and consistently in Class II-IV whitewater.
  • Must be able to rescue participants in Class II-IV whitewater.

The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.
