The Television Academy, based in the NoHo Arts District in North Hollywood, California, is a nonprofit organization devoted to celebrating and empowering storytellers to push the boundaries of what Television can be. The only major organization fully representing the television and broadband screen entertainment industry, it is made up of nearly 20,000 members, representing 31 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors and various other artisans, technicians and executives.

The Television Academy recognizes excellence among its peers with the Emmy award, culminating in the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast each fall. The Television Academy also produces several other awards shows and a variety of activities and events for its members throughout the year. Senior Manager, Publications/Senior Editor—Departments

Position is full-time, exempt, salary range is $75,000 - $80,000 annually, hybrid (3 days in office currently; subject to change)

Summary of Position

In collaboration with editorial colleagues, identifies, selects, commissions and manages editorial content for emmy magazine — including assigning articles, editing manuscripts, writing display copy and full articles as needed, and more. This position also works closely with the editorial team, advertising sales representative, outside contractors and printer to assist with production of the magazine as needed. This individual also may assist with programs for award shows and events, as well as other special projects as needed

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates on day-to-day editorial and production activities of emmy magazine, including editing departments, features and other content as assigned.
  • Collaborates on planning of ongoing editorial content and makes appropriate assignments or delegates assigning to editorial colleagues.
  • Collaborates on annual editorial calendar.
  • Evaluates story pitches.
  • Conceives story ideas in conjunction with editorial staff and freelance contributors, seeking wide-ranging, inclusive subjects representative of the Television Academy’s peer groups and the television industry as a whole.
  • Prepares and distributes editorial rundown for each issue.
  • Establishes and enforces deadlines to keep magazine on schedule.
  • Liaises with network and personal publicists and other representatives to obtain cooperation of subjects for editorial opportunities.
  • Liaises with creative director, photography editor, contributors and advertising sales representative as needed.
  • Contributes articles and other copy as needed.
  • Fact-checks and edits copy in key sections as identified.
  • Writes headlines, subheads, captions, credits, cover lines and other ancillary copy.
  • Delegates editing to contributing editors as needed and reviews finished product.
  • Liaises with creative director and photography editor on photo shoots and layouts.
  • Provides creative director with contacts for art acquisition.
  • Ensures that all editorial complies with ethical codes of practice and legal guidelines.
  • Manages, and monitors the work of, the Print & Digital Content Editor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors’ degree in Journalism, English or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in editing, publishing and production.
  • Strong command of spelling, grammar, news and feature writing and copyediting at a professional level required.
  • Interest in, and knowledge of, the television industry, including key companies, VIPs and trends in broadcast, cable and digital media.
  • Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, online content management systems, web authoring software, and exposure to HTML/CSS code.
  • Intermediate-level or higher command of, or ability to learn, photo/graphics content editing software preferred; prior work with video content a plus.
  • Experience with, or ability to learn, metadata optimization and digital asset management.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms.
  • Team-development skills and experience training individuals in small groups and one-on-one strongly preferred.

  • Self-motivated, with excellent organizational and time-management skills.
