Job Description Summary:
Facilities, Buildings & Grounds (FBG) is currently seeking a Life Safety Systems Technician to help support the University’s mission in education. Reporting to the Life Safety Systems Supervisor, the Life Safety Systems Technician supports the Fire and Life Safety team to effectively investigate and identify fire alarm and fire sprinkler system problems and develop plans to repair and maintain these systems throughout the University. More specifically, the Technician is responsible for:
  • Evaluates facilities/equipment to identify unsafe conditions and develops preventative and/or improvement maintenance schedules for all fire systems and their components.
  • Inspects fire systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; designs and plans fire system alterations
  • Works with Risk Management and Housing Operations leads to inspect, identify, and facilitate corrections of regulatory violations.
  • Maintains knowledge of Federal, State, and Local safety regulations, protocol, codes, and procedures pertaining to fire/life safety.
  • May serve in or represent supervisor at various meetings that may impact the unit.
  • Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending job related seminars, workshops, conferences and/or reviewing published literature.
  • Develops a close relationship with the office of risk management and other University offices.
  • Performs other work related duties as requested. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


The Life Safety Systems Technician may work around and/or with machine tools that present certain dangers, and all safety precautions must be followed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level II (Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems Certification), Or Fire Alarm System Manufacturer Factory Training meeting any one or more of the four below criteria:
  • Personnel who are factory trained and certified for the specific type and brand of system being serviced.

or
  • Personnel who are certified by a nationally recognized certification organization acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.
or
  • Personnel who are registered, licensed, or certification by state or local authority to perform service on systems addressed within the scope of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.
or
  • Personnel who are employed and qualified by an organization listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory for the servicing of systems within the scope of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.
A valid Driver’s License is preferred. Must pass a motor vehicle license check to be eligible to drive a GW vehicle.
Professional Engineer License

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with computerized tools and testing equipment programs, as well as, contemporary software packages.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices based on industry standards, injury, and illness prevention practices.
  • Ability to prepare sketches for minor construction projects.
  • Ability to prepare written correspondence to federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex fire/life safety regulations.
