GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs professional and consultative work in planning and implementing a health education program in the Public Health Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Employees in this class develop, organize, and implement a health education program to help meet the particular needs of the community. Work includes developing educational programs, forming special committees and tasks forces, consulting with the private or other public sector agencies, serving as an instructor or media information sources, or coordinating activities with a variety of community resources. Considerable independence in performing the work, establishing work schedules, and making decisions on program activities are present in the positions. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level community health education or program manager and is reviewed through conferences, reports, observation of program activities completed, and feedback from groups receiving the services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Advises and assists nurses, physicians, social workers, and other health care personnel in planning and implementing education components of the agency programs.
- Prepares, selects, assembles, and distributes health education and informational materials to agencies, schools. organizations, and other groups interested in health program and problems.
- Visits schools, community organizations, professional groups, and private organizations to share information, advise on particular program and health activities, and help in developing interest and participation in the health program.
- Provides consultative services to teachers, principals, day care centers, community organizations, private companies, and other public agencies on methods and means to implement and educate students, employees, or the public on a variety of health education topics.
- Serves as the media liaison and contact for a particular health program; prepares and releases feature stories to the public for informational and educational purposes.
- Plans, develops, and conducts workshops, sessions, and training opportunities for public groups.
Minority Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP)
- Serve as the lead county contact/representative for Region 5 Diabetes Collaborative
- Teach and/or co-facilitate MDPP classes/programs
- may include attending virtual or in-person sessions and distributing program incentives
- Order MDPP supplies and incentives according to grant’s budget; manage program inventory and keep accurate records of program supplies and incentives
- Attend MDPP regional and community events, meetings, and trainings
- Conduct outreach and/or diabetes screenings within Guilford County, which may include mobile screenings in conjuncture with other health education programs
- Collaborate with internal and external social services, public health services and medical providers/ networks to establish program referrals
- Ensure protocols for CDC recognition process are met by way of accurate and timely data submissions using the DPRP (Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program portal.
- Conduct prediabetes/MDPP information/orientation sessions
- Revise MDPP protocols to adapt to current environmental climate of in-person and online sessions
- Assist in the development of- and participate in- community outreach, educational, and promotional activities throughout the county that engages residents in initiatives focused on Healthy Communities strategies.
- Actively participate in discussion groups and committees to help develop health promotion and disease prevention communications strategies with equitable and culturally appropriate materials and messages.
- Assist in the planning efforts and implementation of healthy food access initiatives to increase healthy food access via efforts in food pantries, farmers markets, local community garden, and other community venues
- Planning, developing, and implementing Advancing Health Equity initiatives as needed per the Healthy Equity Coordinator
- Participating in communicable disease and/or chronic disease prevention and outreach events
- Attending community events (i.e., health fairs) to provide health services and information to the public
- Developing educational materials, including flyers and other infographics, in coordination with the Health Education team and the Communications Manager
- Attend trainings as appropriate (i.e., health equity, racial equity, etc.)
- Performs related duties as required.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health and public health education activities.
- Considerable knowledge of modem educational theory and techniques in the field of public health education.
- Considerable knowledge of graphics and journalistic principles and methods of preparing promotional materials, exhibits, and publications in public health education.
- Ability to design a variety of materials to promote a particular public health program.
- Ability to be innovative and creative in developing public health education activities.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of people on all educational levels.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, private organizations, public sector groups, news media, and the general public.
- Ability to write and speak effectively and to stimulate interest and cooperation among various groups in implementing a public health education program.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education; or graduation from a four-year college or university and completion of one year of on-the-job training (OJT) as a public health educator.
Trainee: Graduation from four-year college or university.
Driving is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
