MAJOR FUNCTIONS: The Industrial Pipe Fitter Technology Educator Instructor is a grant-funded position with the Florida Department of Corrections in the Franklin (Carrabelle, FL) Correctional Institution (CI). The Instructor's primary functions are to teach an appropriate, assigned career/technical education program by facilitating a teaching environment (lecture, group, or individual) targeting a diverse population, resulting in appropriate industry-recognized certifications. The Instructor also works with the student and the educational staff to assist students with an academic and career pathways plan.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Teach an appropriate, assigned career/technical education program through the facilitation of a teaching environment (lecture, group, or individual) targeting a diverse population resulting in the earning of appropriate industry recognized certifications.
  • Work with the student and the educational staff to assist students with an academic and career pathways plan. Maintain a safe instructional environment while safe guarding and maintaining equipment and tools.
  • Guide and advise students, including those with academic problems and recommend resources available to enhance student success. Stay current with Florida Department of Education technical assistance paper reports.
  • Complete paperwork, maintain records, including student, and assist with tracking of critical data elements such as industry recognized certifications. Access computer databases to review student test scores, complete lesson plans, class roosters, and accurate attendance records.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, attend and complete professional development training and attend other meetings on behalf of the project. Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or its equivalent, and six years of experience in the vocation being taught; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of occupational experience in the vocation being taught; or additional education or training may substitute on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required experience. This position will prepare secondary career and technical students to apply technical knowledge and skills to layout, assemble, install and repair pipelines that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases for Industrial production and process systems. Teach students to bend, cut, weld, and bracket pipes; repair pack and adjust valves; test installed equipment for leaks; and check that the systems meet government specifications.
Experience installing pipes and fixtures, connecting lines, and using tools such as pipe threaders, benders, and cutting torches. Preference will be given to those who possess OSHA, NCCER Core and Pipe Fitting Certifications, or Certified Journeyman.
The candidate must be able to work in a non-traditional educational – a state correctional institution. The candidate must be able to pass a DOC background check, which includes fingerprinting. Additionally, the candidate must successfully pass a Tuberculosis (TB) screening. Prefer former teaching experience and a current State of Florida Teacher's Certificate from a Florida School District or a Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) Vocational Certificate, and attain or be able to attain an NCCER Instructor Certification and OSHA 10 1926 Card.

Knowledge of Florida Department of Education vocational frameworks. Excellent human relationship skills. Skilled in project management, organization of tasks, and responsive follow-through. Ability to use MS Office applications and internet navigation. Basic experience using MS Word and PowerPoint. Ability to use teaching strategies that meet the varying abilities of students. Ability to critically assess situations and make sound judgments. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques. Ability to communicate course material to students in an effective manner. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to interact with other project and DOC staff appropriately. Ability to work independently or as a part of a team and make independent decisions. Ability to multi-task. Ability to keep accurate & thorough records.
