THE PARK
Just 20 miles from Richmond, Pocahontas offers boating, picnicking, camping, camping cabins, 90-plus miles of trails, and nature and history programs. The Aquatic Center, which has a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three-foot and five-foot-deep leisure pools, an activity pool and two tubular water slides, affords seasonal water-based activities for all. Three lakes offer plenty of fishing. Boat rentals are available seasonally by the 225-acre Swift Creek Lake. The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, dedicated to Depression-era workers who helped build the state park system, is one of a handful in the nation. Two dining halls may be rented for meetings, weddings and special events. Rustic group facilities with primitive overnight cabins (bunkhouses) are available seasonally for larger groups.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Position provides meaningful educational opportunities and experiences for park guests by interpreting the significance of the park’s natural/historical/and cultural resources. The Education Support Specialist is responsible for the daily planning and conducting of interpretive programs and educational outreach, including corresponding with the general public, schools, scout groups etc. about programming. The position is responsible for maintaining interpretive displays in the Visitor Center and Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and assisting with the daily care and health of all exhibit animals. Other duties include maintaining all interpretive supplies and ensuring they are in good working order, creating new interpretive and cultural/historical programs, working with other local organizations to diversify programming, writing blogs or interpretive signage, attending professional development workshops and seminars, obtaining canoe/kayak paddle guide certification, assisting park visitors using good customer service techniques, keeping accurate records and assisting with other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
As it relates to
MINIMUM qualifications, successful applicants will highlight in their applications:
- Ability to organize and conduct nature, culture, and history programs for all ages.
- A knowledge of Virginia history and understanding of ecology and familiarity with the area’s flora and fauna is helpful.
- Must be 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license.
- A background check will be required.
Preferred Qualifications
As it relates to
PREFERRED qualifications, successful applicants will highlight:
- Prior experience or education in biology, history, parks and recreation or wildlife studies preferred.
- Conversational Spanish preferred.
Special Requirements
For the position, experience is not required, but is preferred. Weekends and holiday work required. We provide on the job training. Employees may be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies, or on a non-recurrent basis. Seasonal summer jobs can be an outstanding first step toward a lasting career with the park service.
There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. Employer participates in e-Verify.
