The Residential Shelter Team is looking for a creative, organized and compassionate individual to join their team as the Shelter Cook.
JOB SUMMARY
DVS Cooks plan, prepare, cook and serve meals under general direction; provide inventory control, including recordkeeping, equipment control, food acquisition and storage.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan meals.
- Prepare and order appropriate groceries, meats, staples, etc.
- Prepare and serve meals.
- Operate all equipment in the kitchen including mixers, grinders, slicers, ovens, dishwashers, etc.
- Clean kitchen equipment including dishes, pots, pans, utensils, shelving, sinks, refrigerators, etc. to ensure appropriate cleanliness.
- Secure kitchen and pantry upon departure.
- Stock groceries in appropriate places as delivered.
- Oversee resident chores including trash removal, dining room cleaning, dish washing and food preparation.
- Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Operations Manager.
CLERICAL/GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE
- Responds to routine emails, phone calls, etc.
- Makes copies, prints documents, etc.
- Files Paperwork
Budget Responsibility
- Oversees food and kitchen supply budget in conjunction with the Shelter Operations Manager
Support to Management, Supervisors and Staff
Key Relationships
- Interacts with Shelter Manager, staff, clients, volunteers, interns and other agencies and organizations as necessary to provide comprehensive food service to residents.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
- Prior experience as a prep cook; preparing large portions
Licenses/Credentials/Certifications
- ServeSafe Certification required
Skills/Specialized Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to establish priorities and work independently in providing and presenting appetizing and attractive meals.
- Knowledge of rules for personal and environmental safety and sanitation.
- Ability to dress and interact professionally with the staff and residents of the shelter.
- Ability to work with individuals across the spectrum of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation and socioeconomic background.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to reflect the YWCA mission to empower women and eliminate racism in work performance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working Hours/Environment
- 40 hours per week
- 11-7pm shift
- Saturday – Wednesday
- This position is fully on-site

- Computer, copier, fax/scanner, phone, and other typical office equipment
Travel
- As required with respect to job responsibilities and business needs.
