Primary Purpose
Serve veterans on campus by providing administrative support and outreach to current and new veterans on campus. Serve as primary Department of Defense (DOD) and secondary Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) liaison and School Certifying Official for USI. Supervise student support staff and the processes involved in Veteran certification and retention. Provide backup oversight for the Veteran Support Services (VSS) lounge and study area.

Essential Functions
  • Serve as primary DOD and secondary VA School Certifying Official for benefits. Evaluate the veteran circumstances and ensure their application for the program/s most beneficial to them and the University. Responsible for filing and properly following up on claims exceeding $1 million annually.
  • Coordinate veteran orientation experience and conduct orientation sessions for veterans on orientation days and other days as specified.
  • Provide information regarding veteran’s education benefits and campus support services as requested.
  • Provide information to faculty, staff, and advisors regarding changes to veterans’ programs or needs.
  • Provide a warm and welcoming customer service experience, as a representative of USI, for visitors, students, staff, faculty, administrators, and participants of veteran events by phone, email, and in-person as applicable.
  • Organize veteran mentor program. Assist the Assistant Director, Veteran, Military, and Family Resource Center, recruit veterans on campus each semester (faculty, staff, and continuing student veterans) to serve as mentors to newly arriving veterans.
  • Supervise DOD and VA work study student employees, scheduling and training, assigning tasks and providing guidance as needed. Participate in the hiring process. Ensure that student employees have up-to-date FERPA training.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing of Veterans Support Services office and lounge.
  • Develop processes and procedures congruent with those of the DOD, VA, and other government entities, as well as USI.
  • Promote and implement events and other networking opportunities on and off campus for veterans according to plans and under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director for Veteran, Military, and Family Resources Center. Make arrangements as needed for guest speakers, create, and distribute promotional materials, coordinate with food services and prepare/present information regarding veterans’ benefits and relevant programs at the University.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • Two years college or 5 years or more related office experience required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Candidates with strong military experience or substantial directly related higher education experience preferred.
  • Experience with DOD and VA benefit programs and service as provider or consumer strongly preferred. Alternatively, demonstrated aptitude for learning, retaining, and applying technical information and for logical analysis of operational processes is required.
  • Must be highly accurate with numbers and capable of performing accurate and sometimes complex calculations.
  • Strong working knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) preferred.
  • Must possess a strong work ethic and show evidence of creativity and ingenuity in solving problems.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and human interaction skills suitable to one-on-one and group interactions, especially in working effectively with the diverse needs of the veterans, Veterans Affairs, and the academic community.
  • Able to serve as effective role model, upholding university and military values.
  • Must possess a high level of attention to detail and have expertise in editing and creating written material.
  • Must prioritize multiple competing projects and manage time, staff, and resources accordingly to complete responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work individually and in leadership of others.
