UTILITY WORKER
DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to drive a District vehicle in the pickup and delivery of equipment furniture, building materials, parts, supplies, and other items to schools’ sites, District and public offices, and suppliers; and to perform related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class perform the duties of a delivery driver and in addition, perform as a grounds and maintenance helper and may be assigned to perform custodial work. Incumbents perform semi-skilled and unskilled duties as a team member or independently, as the need arises.
SUPERVISION
Receives first-level supervision from the Director of Maintenance and Operations or the Assistant Director of Maintenance and Operations. Lead supervisors, internal customers (such as site personnel), external customers (such as community members), and suppliers (such as vendors and contractors) may provide input to the supervisor for performance evaluation.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Perform daily safety inspection of vehicles and operate vehicle to and from school sites, district and public offices, and vendor locations obeying traffic laws and observing defensive driving practices; wash and fuel vehicles.

Pick up building materials, parts, supplies, and rental equipment at varied vendor location and deliver to work sites and M&O; load and transport furniture to and from school locations and the M&O Department; load and transport student and staff luggage. Assist in the set-up of furniture for special event

Operate photocopier and other modem office equipment. Receive, verify, check for damage, and store supplies in warehouse; prepare records of receipt; photocopy documents.

Operate hand truck, pallet jack, and forklift.

Perform the full range of duties of the custodian class as assigned. Perform semi-skilled and unskilled building and grounds maintenance duties as a team member or independently, as the need arises.

Serve on assigned committees and teams. Participate in District-mandated training and retraining programs.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Confer with supervisor on matters of team performance, to recommend and obtain authorization for purchases, to schedule work and to discuss technical problems.

Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspection and operate District vehicle to and from work sites and vendor locations obeying traffic laws and observing defensive driving practices; wash and fuel vehicles and check fluid levels.

Wear identification. Wear and use specialized safety and protective equipment/clothing (such as respirator) needed to perform job duties. Perform safety inspections and report observed health and safety hazards to a supervisor.

Serve on assigned committees and teams. Participate in District mandated training and retraining programs.

May be called to work day or night in emergency situations. Perform related duties as assigned.
LICENSES
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's license. Some positions may be required to possess or obtain a California Class Il Driver’s License, which may be obtained at District expense.

Possession of Power Actuated Anchoring System License is required and may be obtained at District cost.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:

Theory, practices, procedures, methods, materials, and equipment used in the trade(s) areas assigned to the team lead position.

Technical aspects of the field of specialty.

Applicable codes, regulations and safety precautions.

Modem leadership methods.

Work scheduling.

Record keeping methods.

Shop math applicable to the field of specialty. English usage.

Ability to:

Perform journey-level work in one or more of the trades of an assigned team or shop. (The trade(s) areas required for the position are determined by the District)

Plan, schedule, monitor, inspect and correct the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers assigned to a specialized team or shop.

Lead team members by example and enforce established standards and rules.

Analyze and interpret technical manuals, schematic drawings, blue print, and specifications.

Maintain accurate records and prepare routine reports and correspondence.

Perform shop mathematics accurately.

Communicate effectively and problem solve with customers and suppliers.

Schedule and monitor work to meet cost and time requirements.

Work with considerable independence in leading a team and performing skilled work.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Operate a District vehicle observing traffic laws and using defensive driving practices.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
