Unit Manager - Job at Virginia Sussex I & Sussex II State Prisons Complex

Virginia Sussex I & Sussex II State Prisons Complex Sussex, VA

Contributes to the agency’s public safety mission by serving as the manager of one or more housing units at Sussex State Prison Complex. Collaborates with security, treatment, maintenance and support staff to ensure supervisees receive effective reentry programming and services based on evidence-based (EBP) principles and practices. Oversees offender classification, discipline, programs and services, security operations, audit compliance documentation, and building maintenance and sanitation for assigned unit(s).

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent certificate. Extensive working knowledge of prison operations, policies and procedures. Experience effectively communicating with all levels of institutional staff, supervisees and supervisees family members. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver reports and presentations to diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to make effective operational decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminal justice, public administration or a human services field. An equivalent combination of training and/or experience may substitute for the educational preference. Prefer working knowledge of security and treatment within an adult correctional setting. Prefer working knowledge of evidence-based research and practices for prison operations. Prefer working knowledge of reentry programs and services available to offenders. Prefer experience supervising correctional staff.

Special Requirements
