PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Y Creator Space is composed of two well-resourced maker space classrooms. One classroom hosts an established after school STEAM program for youth ages 9-12. The other classroom is a 1,020 sq ft., newly renovated maker space designed to host STEAM focused youth and family programs providing innovative learning experiences that advance digital inclusion and help youth build relevant workforce readiness and technology skills.

POSITION SUMMARY

The program coordinator must be committed to enriching youth and impacting their creative, cognitive and social-emotional development in an out-of-school time setting. Primary responsibilities include direct programming, coordination and collaboration with other Y departments and organizations, lesson planning and supervision of staff and volunteers. The STEAM coordinator will lead a team in the development and implementation of innovative, hands-on, project-based STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) learning experiences that embrace deep inclusion practices and social emotional learning development. The position will require a tech-savvy, self-motivated professional capable of engaging diverse groups of youth ranging from 8-18. The program coordinator reports to the Director of Youth Development at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA.

SCHEDULE

• Full time - 40 hours per week.
• Weekday schedule is 11am-7pm with some flexibility.
• Occasional Saturday hours required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Lead a team of staff and volunteers in the ongoing development and implementation of hands-on STEAM lessons and learning units that are age appropriate, relevant, equitable and engaging
• Maintain a safe, supportive and collaborative learning environment for students through program consistency, clear expectations and group agreements
• Develop and maintain partnerships that bring school and community groups to the makerspace for short and long term workshops and programs
• Develop and enact strategies to widen participation and audience reach across camps, classes, events, and programs
• Develop, maintain and deepen relationships with related external organizations, such as colleges and universities, industry trade associations, cultural organizations, and others
• Plan and execute special events including open houses, family nights and STEM showcases.
• Maintain an inventory of technology and ensure the safe and effective use of program resources, including computers, 3D printers, tablets.
• Actively learn, use and train others on tech-based resources such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, audiovisual equipment, Lego Robotics and AR/VR technology.
• Track and record total youth served, measurable outcomes and program successes
• Integrate intentional social-emotional development with an emphasis on collaboration, communication, empathy and leadership.
• Model the Y’s core values of honesty, caring, integrity and respect.
• Be responsive to current trends in the fields of STEAM, project-based learning and maker education.
• Work with Director of Youth Development to develop and achieve measurable outcomes that are aligned with grants.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree or technical degree preferred.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

• 3+ years of teaching and/or youth development experience, particularly with middle and high school youth.
• Classroom management skills and the ability to effectively lead a group of youth through an activity.
• Must possess a collaborative, team-focused attitude; be innovative, creative, and attentive to detail.
• Have a thorough knowledge and fluency in current technology and be unafraid of experimenting with new technology.
• Familiarity or expertise in foundational STEAM skills such as coding, engineering, design thinking or environmental/garden education.
• Ability to develop new, innovative programs that maximize the use of technology resources
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Be able to plan, implement and evaluate activities and program objectives.
• The ideal candidate is mission-driven, self-motivated, adaptive, committed to excellence and has a positive attitude.
• Obtain and maintain required clearances (PATCH Criminal background, Compass Child Abuse, Identogo FBI Clearance, National Sex Offender Registry Certificate).

Physical Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand in excess of 15 minutes at a time; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Pay: $36,279.00 - $40,000.00 per year
