Job Title: Sign Painter (2000-12, 3342)

Department: Police Department, Traffic Division

Reports To: Police Chief, WF Sign Painter, Supervisor of Sign and Meter Division

Union: AFSCME

FLSA: Non-exempt

Salary: $17.7318 (min) to $22.8293 (max) per hour; 40 hours per week

SUMMARY Performs skilled work in the application of paint for signs, lettering etc. and designs the layout of signs and lettered surfaces.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Under direction and supervision of the Supervisor of the Paint and Meter Division and other designated personnel: Reads work orders to determine type of sign specified, work procedures, and materials required.

Draws outline of sign on outside window or dusts pounce pattern to mark outline and paints inside of window following drawing or outline, when painting window signs.

Paints sign, positions leaf over fresh paint, and removes excess leaf after sign has dried, when making gold or silver leaf signs.

Cuts out letters and applies background coating to construct and prepare signs.

Projects layout image on paper and traces outline of design.

Prepares area for painting which may require: scraping, dusting, sanding, or other similar activity to insure proper adhesion.

Performs skilled painting, lettering, design and layout work in making signs and lettering surfaces of vehicles, doors, walls, machinery and equipment.

Performs free hand and stencil lettering, decorative gold leaf lettering.

Mixes paints, enamels and varnishes.

Constructs signs out of raw materials.

Hangs/posts signs using tools in various locations throughout the City.

Repaints signs and incidental repair and manual tasks.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Must have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time in sign painting or related field.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the particular trade.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

LICENSES

Valid Driver's License from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Safe driving history.
