Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurse
(APN)

Position Overview: Under the direction of the BCIS Director and supervised for medical practice by the collaborating
psychiatrist and the Bridgeway Medical Director, provides direct psychiatric assessment, differential diagnosis,
medications and direct services to persons-served by the program. Supports and trains other team members in the
medical aspects of psychiatric treatment.
Essential Job Functions
Create and Maintain:
o A wellness and recovery-oriented environment by using person-first language, respectful documentation, and
person-centered planning. All services provided will promote wellness and recovery outcomes.
o A culture of compliance with internal and external policies, regulations, laws and high ethical standards
Roles and Responsibilities:
o Participates in the comprehensive assessment process for persons served.
o Provide psychiatric evaluation of each person referred and, in accordance with the law, prescribes psychiatric
medications under the supervision of the collaborating psychiatrist with support from the Bridgeway Medical
Director.
o Encourages reluctant persons served to accept mental health services through interventions with persons
served and/or family members and friends concerned with the person's served welfare
o Develops and implements, in conjunction with other members of the team, a comprehensive assessment and
Goal and Discharge Plan that addresses the treatment and aftercare community needs of the persons served
o Prescribes medication using best medication management practices.
o Manage the programs sample medication system.
o Adheres to nursing protocols regarding medication administration and storage. Adheres to nursing protocols
regarding medication administration and storage.
o Provide mental and physical health education, medication education and counseling, supportive counseling in
the office, home and other natural environments to persons served and significant others, of ten focusing on
psychiatric medications, side-effects and physical health care.
o Provide crisis intervention services for persons served with acute psychiatric needs whose circumstances and
conditions require intervention, including the provision of medication, if indicated.
o Provide brief therapy treatment in group or individual sessions.
o Ensure linkage with prescribers during intake, referral and discharge.
o Provides medication counseling to persons served, family members and /or significant others in group or
individual sessions.
o Provide support and training on psychiatric diagnosis and treatment to the other members of the Program.
o Available on-call 24 hours.
Assessment:
o With the team, the ongoing mental status and progress of medication treatment for persons served.
Participates:
o As a team member in the frequent monitoring and assessment of the mental and physical health status of
persons served as well as related variables, including significant others the home and community in
which the persons served live.
o Attends scheduled meetings, facilitated by the Medical Director, that bring together Bridgeway prescribers
for discussion of best practice, and policy and procedures.
o In team meetings as assigned to review progress of persons served by the program.
o In supervision at least once per month with Director to review performance and goals. Actively seeks out
this supervision with supervisor.

Coordinates:
o Treatment with persons' served primary care providers and linkage with communi ty services.
Administers:
o Prescribed medications and injections, draws blood if certified to do so, and prepares laboratory
specimens for delivery. Is responsible for accurate record-keeping of all medications administered.
Requirements
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in nursing required
Current license as a Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurse required
CAC, CADC preferred
Experience
One-year paid post degree/certification work experience preferred
DRIVER’S LICENSE, VEHICLE
Valid driver’s license required
No more than one moving violation within the past 12 months
Vehicle required
Subcommittee and Mandated Trainings Statements:
All employees are encouraged to participate on an agency committee, on a rotating basis.
Mandatory trainings are to be completed during regularly scheduled working hours. It is the employee’s
responsibility to attend mandatory trainings when they are offered by the agency and to complete mandatory webbased
training in a timely manner. Employees failing to attend mandatory trainings are required to make up the
training on their own time and at their own expense, i.e., CPR training.
