Position Description

POSITION TITLE: APP (Nurse Practitioner [NP] or Physician Assistant [PA]) Fellow

LOCATON: Pinehurst Medical Clinic practices in Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Sanford, North Carolina

REPORTS TO: APP Fellowship Program Director and Supervising Physician

SECTION I: POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an immersive 12-month training position that utilizes an interprofessional approach to prepare fellows to step into the fast-paced role of an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with Pinehurst Medical Clinic (PMC). The program includes weekly didactics, precepted practice sessions, and other supplementary educational components that will support the APP Fellow’s transition to autonomous practice. The curriculum will have an emphasis on geriatric medicine to better attend to the adult population seen by PMC providers. The program also includes a heavy emphasis on evidence-based medicine to help Fellows develop critical reasoning skills, leadership, and clinical practice under risk-based payment arrangements. All Fellows will work under the direct guidance of physicians or APP preceptors, APP mentors, and program directors. A successful applicant for this role will be responsible for providing services independently and collaboratively, including initial and ongoing patient assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, etc..

SECTION III: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses patient health status including state of wellness, and compliance with a care plan, and determines appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Provides acute and chronic patient care including taking histories, doing physicals, monitoring therapies, giving injections and medications, and suturing wounds.
  • Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems.
  • Makes responsible decisions within the scope of a dependent medical practitioner.
  • Responds to emergencies including the use of CPR.
  • Documents patient information and care provided in patient records and maintains department statistics. Uses computer to access/enter needed data.
  • Develops as-needed health education programs and materials
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Educates patients and families as appropriate. Provides continuity of care.
  • Consults with other staff as necessary.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Leadership Job Functions:

  • Participate in all aspects of the fellowship program to enhance/refine leadership skills
  • Collaborate and consult with physicians and other health care professionals, as appropriate
  • Develop essential organizational skills to manage patient panel
  • Develop effective and efficient communication skills with interprofessional teams

Educational Job Functions

  • Attend all educational components of the fellowship program as scheduled
  • Identify individual professional development needs and work with APP preceptors and mentors to create opportunities for learning and growth
  • Participate in live Q&A sessions and journal club
  • Complete a quality improvement project, including a poster presentation

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Licensures & Certifications

  • Must have an active license to practice nursing in the state of North Carolina as a Registered Nurse.
  • Must have written approval by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or current North Carolina PA license, certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • BLS/CPR Certification required.
