Department Description and Cultural Expectations
Housed since 1955 at the state’s flagship liberal arts university, the Institute of American Indian Studies (IAIS) is committed to advancing educational and research on the history, culture, and language of the nine federally recognized Tribal Nations (Oceti Sakowin) of South Dakota for students, faculty, and staff at the University of South Dakota. The Institute serves as an intellectual space on the USD campus that brings together community, students, staff, and faculty through academic and cultural programming. The Institute is also dedicated to innovative research rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems that utilize and center Indigenous theories and methodologies by supporting community driven research that follows tribal protocols. IAIS connects USD to tribal nations and communities while it reaffirms tribal sovereignty through responsible, collaborative relationships. The Institute is especially interested in supporting undergraduate and graduate student research that is collaborative, reciprocal, and responsive to American Indian tribal nations and communities. Finally, the Institute supports and invests in the future tribal nations by increasing access to higher education at USD through scholarships.

The University of South Dakota is the state’s flagship institution, the oldest university, and the only public liberal arts university in South Dakota. USD offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to more than 10,000 students, and is located in Vermillion, a small and dynamic community nestled along the bluffs above the Missouri River in the southeast corner of South Dakota. Located about one hour from Sioux Falls (South Dakota’s largest city), and half an hour from Sioux City, IA, the area offers many recreational and cultural opportunities.
