Description:
**The Middle School Counselor is responsible for offering counseling and guidance with the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of all students. Through direct observation, group settings, one-on-one sessions, and work with teachers and parents, the middle school counselor ensures the school curriculum and environment accommodate all students. The school counselor will collaborate with several different professional/departmental groups to support social, emotional, behavioral, and academic interventions. This position maintains positive interpersonal relationships with students, parents, peers, and community members and provides the best possible opportunities for student development and growth, both educationally and personally.

**Reports to: Middle School Principal and Restorative Interventions Counseling Director
**Direct Reports: This is a non-supervisory position.

*Compensation:

*Essential Functions:
**Collaboration:
**
** Meets regularly with administrators and counseling department to create a collaborative team approach*
** Provides academic counseling and works with AVID teachers to create college and career pathways for students as well as build successful academic strengths for middle and high school success*
** Collaborates with administrators and works actively on the master schedule to provide the best outcomes and opportunities for students.*
** Provides academic checks for student success on assigned caseload on a continuous basis.*
** Collaborates on and supports MTSS, Restorative Practices, and appropriate social/emotional/behavioral interventions.*
** Conducts observations to gather data and inform intervention process.*
** Works within a referral system, using referrals from teachers, MTSS teams, administrators, parents, or students to assess the need and coordinate relevant, evidence-based interventions and services.*
** Provide classroom management training and specific tools to teachers to assist with students' specific needs.*
** Participates in suicide risk assessments and threat assessments, partnering with a larger team and administrators.*
** Provides curriculum-based counseling as needed to individuals and groups of students.*
** Acts as liaison to connect students and families to outside resources as needed.*
** Regularly communicates with parents of students who present as needing additional supports/counseling intervention.*
** Works with groups of students to address subjects such as bullying, conflict resolution, teamwork, and tolerance of diversity.*
** Works with the counseling department, administration, and larger stakeholders to create and implement systems to address subjects such as bullying, conflict resolution, teamwork, and tolerance of diversity.*
** Works with individual students as needed on challenges at home or school, coping strategies, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and self-esteem.*
** Serves as a member of the Crisis Team, reporting as a counselor.*
** Participates as a member of ASCA, staying current in best practice in school counseling and striving to perform within the ASCA National Model.*
**
**Curriculum:
**
** Help raise student awareness and improve coping skills as proactive SEB education to prevent problems before they start.*
** Help to plan grade-level appropriate events, as needed, that will meet the needs of all students. Examples include the Sign of Suicide presentation, Back to School Night, College and Career expo, Parent Education Sessions, etc.*
** Work with Restorative Interventions Director, AVID district director, site leaders and coordinators, and counseling team to support larger school initiatives, curriculum rollouts, and related events.*
** Creates meaningful SEL lessons to foster and promote social/emotional/behavioral growth of all students in 6th through 8th grade.*
** Provide professional development and individualized training as needed for teachers and peers in areas of school mental health topics, SEB interventions, and academic supports, when appropriate.*
** Provide guidance and support and/or direction of socio-emotional learning, restorative practices, and academic interventions, and enrichment activities.*
** Work with groups of students, sometimes in the classroom, or in a group space to teach on topics of concern to the school community (behavior bands, trends, etc).*

**Additionally:
**
** Attend all required in-service trainings.*
** Be present and engage in Pinnacle functions and organizations to build strong relationships with students, parents, peers, and the community.*
** Maintain and deepen current educational learning on an ongoing basis.*
** Staying current on with emerging trends in child psychology, coping strategies, and student behavior.*
** Regular and timely attendance.*
** Perform other duties as assigned.*

*General Abilities, Knowledge, Qualifications, and Skills:

** Must possess a valid Professional License.*
** Masters in School Counseling.*
** Prefer experience working with diverse student groups, high-needs student groups, and socio-economically disadvantaged student groups from various backgrounds to achieve exceptional results in academics.*
** Comfortable embracing and using education-related technology.*
** Innovator with an entrepreneurial drive committed to new ideas in the spirit of charter school possibilities.*
** Knowledge in the use of student performance data to drive instructional practices.*

*Working Conditions:
**Exposure/Noise Level:* Occasional exposure to airborne particles, fumes, and outdoor weather conditions. Normal school environment with moderate to high noise level.*
