MICROBIOLOGIST 2 (IN-TRAINING OPTION)

Olympia, Washington – Thurston County
The first review of applications will take place on November 7th, 2022.
Perform duties related to the discovery and identification of microbes (e.g., viruses and bacteria) affecting trust fish populations.
Contribute to the WDFW mission by providing critical fish health services for fish, in particular, salmon recovery, mitigation, and management decisions
This position may be hired at the Mircobiologist 1 or Microbiologist 2 level. If hired as a Microbiologist 1, the incumbant will complete a 33-month in-training plan before promoting to the goal class.

Some of what our Microbiologist will do:
- Molecular Genetics: DNA extractions; end point PCR, nested PCR, qPCR methods; protocol development; instrumentation; and interpretation.
- Virology: Sample processing and plating, maintain cell culture and cell lines, microscopy, viral CPE, identification of certifiable aquatic animal pathogens, cryopreservation of viral positives and cell lines, dot blot, maintain records logs.
- Bacteriology: Sample processing, plating, streaking, and culture isolation, use of Gram stain, biochemistry, microscopy, antibiotic sensitivity testing, or API testing for identification of certifiable fish pathogens, ELISA for the identification of bacterial antigens, necropsy diagnostics submissions, maintain records log.
- Standard lab procedures: Media preparation, sample submission and record keeping, stocking and inventory of consumables, supply ordering, data entry and review, report preparation, establish procedures and tests, SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) development and writing, equipment maintenance, special project coordination and development as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work is performed in a lab setting, with potentially infectious microbes, and noxious and potentially carcinogenic chemicals.
- Schedule:
- Typically Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Travel Requirements:
- Limited travel is required.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Work is performed utilizing an array of scientific instruments.
- Customer Interactions:
- Limited customer interaction in daily work.
To be considered at the Microbiologist 1 level:
- Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related fields.
AND
- Knowledge of molecular methods (PCR, sequencing, and protocol development); bacteriology, virology, and chemistry; parasitology; mycology; immunology; laboratory terminology, techniques, and equipment; standard analyses, report preparation; sources of data on current microbiology research. Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related fields.
To be considered at the Microbiologist 2 level:
- All the required qualifications for the Microbiologist 1 level.
PLUS
- Knowledge of microscopic examinations and histological staining methods used in the identification of microbes; microbiology research methods and requirements; cell culture and a proficiency interpreting cell culture virology.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- MS of PhD in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related fields.
