This position involves semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in the building, mechanical or electrical trades. An employee in this class works in a variety of trades at the sub-journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment. Work involves minor repair jobs of a routine nature, which are carried out with only general supervision, or more advanced work assisting a journeyman tradesman or foreman in regular trades in maintenance jobs. Supervision is received from a manager, or building maintenance foreman, who assigns work in accordance with the employee’s competence, or assigns the employee to assist journeyman tradesmen, and reviews the work by personal inspections and by reports from individuals for whom the work is performed.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Opens blocked drains; repairs leaky faucets/toilets; cuts and threads pipe; repairs heat pumps, fan coil units, and unit ventilators; replaces bulbs, shades, switches; performs minor electrical repairs; hangs doors; lays linoleum; installs carpet tile, repairs fiberglass shower pans; makes repairs to floors; takes out and replaces/ repairs window screens as needed; repairs windows, sash weights; performs door checks and replaces batteries in electronic locks; makes minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment; makes furniture repairs and minor drywall repairs; paints buildings, rooms, walls or other surfaces as assigned; performs related work as required; must have a valid driver’s license to operator university vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved. Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades involved. Ability to perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Successful performance in an interview and passing a background check also required.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience at the sub-journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment; have experience working with diverse populations; and have been employed in an institutional setting.
