Mailroom Assistant - Senior Job at Baltimore City Public Schools

Functions a lead worker in the collecting, processing, and delivery of incoming and outgoing mail and parcels. Assists in the oversight and participates in the pick up, receipt and distribution of U.S. and inter-office mail. Prepares incoming mail for distribution and processes outgoing mail, including collection of mail, determining and affixing postage, and maintaining records on postage, registered mail and packages.

Essential Functions
  • Assists the Supervisor - Mail Room in the daily operation and activities of the mailroom.
  • Coordinates the receipt and distribution of United Parcel Service deliveries.
  • Trains and provides guidance and instruction to other mailroom personnel in the processing and delivery of mail and parcels.
  • Sorts incoming mail for distribution and dispatches outgoing mail.
  • Processes registered, certified, and insured items, bulk mailings, and packages.
  • Collects and delivers mail and packages. Inspects mail to determine if package is properly sealed and has the required amount of postage.
  • Operates standard equipment including scales, metering devices, mailing machines, bundle machines, photocopiers, facsimile and bar code machines.
  • Maintains logs and prepares reports as assigned.
  • Performs audits of driver logs and monitors adherence to safe driving standards and performance expectations.
  • Operates motor vehicle to transport U.S. mail and inter-departmental mail.
  • Inspect mail vehicles for cleanliness and conformance with safety checks.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school boards policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two years experience in processing U.S. and intra-agency mail.
  • Valid State of Maryland Noncommercial class C driver's license.
  • Knowledge of current postal laws, rates, methods, procedures, regulations, and forms pertaining to all classes of mail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide effective guidance and instruction to mailroom personnel.
  • Ability to sort and process mail and to operate standard office equipment and mailroom machines.
  • Ability to lift and carry mail bags and boxes up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to perform extensive standing and walking.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of responsibility for the safe and efficient handling of mail.
