Job Purpose:

A machinist is responsible for a variety of machine-specific functions—from setting-up equipment, loading materials and operating machinery, to monitoring and optimizing efficiency, maintaining machines and performing quality checks. A machinist will typically have the knowledge and ability to operate and maintain several machines.

* A machinist Roadway position requires work near or has the potential for fouling a track or will work as a flagman, watchman or lookout. These positions have expanded drug screen obligations and utilize the job code reference of RXXX*.

Education / Training:

Preferred:

• Possess expertise and/or certification in Advanced Welding Techniques;

• Hold Certification in Non-Destructive Testing;

• Possess high level of machining Aptitude;

• Read and interpret blueprints and drawings.

Key Job Elements:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates various machines as part of the production process to produce parts for the locomotive industry in accordance with AAR, customer specifications, company guidelines and checklists. Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with PR safety policies;

• Operate manual machines including horizontal mills, engine lathes, and manual grinders to produce locomotive motor parts and axles;

• Use precision gauges and instruments such as micrometers to determine and follow customers specifications;

• Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes;

• Operate overhead cranes and forklifts;

• Other duties as assigned;

• Perform all duties and responsibilities within time standards allowed.

Advanced Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintain specifications by observing, drilling, grooving and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes; Troubleshoot and repair various machines;

• Train other employees.

Qualifications and Experience:

Specific site qualifications and progression may apply, consult with local team;

• Skill Level I -0-1 years of experience;

• Skill Level I – 1-2 years of experience or Technical Degree;

• Skill Level III – 2-5 years of experience and Technical Certifications;

• Skill Level IV – 5+ years of experience, Technical or specific experience.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions:

• Strength – Position requires lifting of 50lbs. Requires stamina and strength to work in tight and confined spaces while installing or repair machinery and components;

• Motion – Position requires standing majority of the day. Frequent walking, squatting, kneeling and climbing of steps and stairs;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Position is exposed to high levels of noise and vibration from using tools. Position is exposed to cutting torches and welding operations. The use of proper PPE is required. The position requires the ability to read QWI and schematics and understand instructions;

• Work Environment – Position can be located inside or outside, dependent on situation. When inside, the employees are subject to temperature extremes in non-temperature-controlled environments. When outside employees are subject to all weather elements. In both cases employees will work with oils and other lubricants;

• Emotional Demands – Employee is expected to work and cooperate as part of team in order to meet production requirements;

• Safety – Position is safety sensitive as it requires working in and around live tracks and operation and repair of heavy equipment. Position requires strict adherence to safety policies (i.e blue flag) and use of all PPE.
