Description:Primary Objective:
The Lower School librarian will collaborate with teaching staff in the development of student literacy through the administration of the library media program, provide specialized instruction to students and teaching staff, and oversee the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of library, information, and curriculum resources. The librarian will provide opportunities for maximum student development and growth through developmentally appropriate learning experiences, as well as design and implement a wide variety of instructional strategies that will accommodate various learning styles in accordance with the school curriculum and mission statement.
Key responsibilities:

  • Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading
  • Provide instruction for students and staff in the use of print and electronic reference tools and information literacy skills
  • Provide instruction in digital stewardship
  • Plan and teach library and research skills as an integral part of the curriculum
  • Serve as a resource for teachers in supporting their classroom curriculum efforts
  • Guide students in the selection of reading and research materials
  • Promote reading and the use of library programs as an integral part of the school, including the organizing and implementing of such library-related activities as a reading promotion week (I Love to Read Week), and a book fair
  • Manage and instruct media technology
  • Supervise, teach, and direct the work of parent or school approved volunteers
  • Organize, manage, and maintain the library including:

o operate and maintain the library’s online operating system
o maintain an organized, attractive physical appearance of the library
o supervise the circulation process
o manage the budgets for purchase of library books and resources
o manage the library collection by selective purchasing and retiring books
o Share spaces with the school

  • Participate in professional associations like the Georgia Independent School Librarians Associate and attend seminars or workshops
  • Implement instructional activities that contribute to a positive environment where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences
  • Develop well-planned lessons through a Biblical worldview including appropriate work within and outside of the classroom
  • Maintain selection that fits the school’ mission
  • Arrange and coordinate author visits for lower school
  • Intentional collaboration with other division librarians
  • Effectively use best teaching practices to adapt teaching methods, instructional materials, and learning opportunities to meet students' varying needs and interests
  • Instruct using a balance of teaching methods that provide students with opportunities to explore, question, investigate, and think critically
  • Assess student progress through observations, assignments, and assessments, and communicate and collaborate with parents, other teachers, counselors, and administrators regarding students' progress
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
  • Observe and collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment
  • Assist with development and implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum
  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures
  • Integrate thoughtful use of technology to enhance classroom instruction
  • Commit to and participate actively in professional development opportunities
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required
  • Demonstrate stewardship of Whitefield resources and spaces
  • Collaborate with colleagues and staff to support the school community, including participation in admission activities
  • Adhere to the bylaws, policies and procedures, and to all laws that govern the school and its actions
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by administration

Requirements:

Required Professional and Personal Attributes, Skills, Knowledge and Experience:*

  • Minimum of three years successful experience as a librarian and enthusiasm for working with elementary children highly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university in Library and Information Science or Education Media Technology; Master’s degree preferred
  • Ability to read aloud comfortably and in an engaging way
  • Strong aptitude for and knowledge of library science at the elementary level is preferred
  • Exhibit a passion for learning and teaching
  • Ability to develop rapport with students
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrate computer literacy and proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Suite, facile use of Google Suite). Experience with electronic whiteboards such as Epson and Promethean, as well as Smart Boards and Schoology (or another learning management system) is a plus.

Work for this position will take place primarily in a classroom, and secondarily an office. The physical demands of this position include lifting up to 10 pounds often, up to 25 pounds intermittently, and up to 50 pounds rarely; carrying up to 10 pounds often, up to 25 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds rarely; crawling rarely; climbing/balancing and kneeling intermittently; pushing/pulling and crouching regularly; reaching, sitting, walking, standing, bending, and stooping often. To perform this job the person must be able to work for extended periods of time at a computer/keyboard; must be able to talk, hear, stand, sit, and/or walk for extended periods of time; and must possess normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
