Policy Fellow
Save The Bay’s mission is to protect and restore the Bay for people and wildlife. We are the only regional organization that integrates political advocacy, wetland restoration, and education to shape a healthy and resilient region. We are a team of passionate people, and at the core, we are collaborative, supportive, dedicated, and bold. The organization has begun a process to create a workplace that genuinely values diversity and is equitable, inclusive, and accessible to all. We are committed to this eternal work and approach it with humility and intentionality.
Position Summary
The Policy Fellow works as part of Save The Bay’s Policy Department, with a specific focus on planning, research, and outreach to support strategic campaigns to restore wetlands, prepare our communities – particularly disadvantaged communities - for climate change, and protect the health of San Francisco Bay for people, habitats and wildlife.
Save The Bay’s Fellowship Program is a highly regarded and professional program delivering critical support to staff to ensure a thriving and healthy San Francisco Bay. Fellows actively contribute to the organization and receive hands-on experience and individual mentorship as members of Save The Bay’s talented and passionate staff. This program is an excellent opportunity for professional development and offers insight into a non-profit sector career.
Sea level rise and storm surges pose a dangerous flood threat to communities, infrastructure, businesses, and wildlife throughout the San Francisco Bay region. Upstream flooding from stronger and more frequent storms, along with extreme heat and other climate impacts are expected to increase as well, posing climate threats to communities across the region.
This position will require periodic in-person meetings in San Jose to support efforts to fund and expand the incorporation of green stormwater infrastructure into city streets to provide multiple benefits including stormwater management, urban heat reduction, and pedestrian and bike safety. Additionally, this position will promote elements of Save The Bay’s sea level rise and flood strategy at the local and regional levels.
Disadvantaged communities are some of the most vulnerable to climate change due to chronic underinvestment in infrastructure, redlining policies, exposure to contaminated sites, and other social injustices. Save The Bay’s flood and resilience policies seek to support these communities and prioritize natural solutions to help them adapt to climate change.
