Engineering Undergraduate/Graduate Students Culvert Inspection Program (Remote) Job at University Enterprises, Inc.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire an engineering student assistant to assist staff in a wide range of services relating to the Division of Maintenance Culvert Inspection Program (CIP) functions under close supervision of the Senior Transportation Engineer of the Office of Stormwater and Environmental Compliance. Duties may include, but are not limited to, providing assistance in the development of CIP database from various sources, such as Microsoft (MS) Excel & MS Access.
Candidate will assist in developing computer applications to monitor the overall health of the Department's drainage assets for compliance with State Senate Bill 1 (SB1), Transportation funding. Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must possess strong data management, organizational and communication skills; ability to operate basic office equipment and to work independently or in a group setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Visual Basic Programming and Microsoft Access database.
- Knowledge of Oracle database design is a plus but not required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Student will work alongside professionals. Duties will include assisting the office with:
- Research, analysis, document writing, editing and review
- Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel (spreadsheet) compilation, sorting, and information organization.
- Assist in the processing of culvert inspection data. Research and gather information to enter into a database. Also, assist with troubleshooting for errors in the data. Communication with Caltrans staff to resolve data error issues. Assist in creating reports with data generated from the database.
- Assist with preparing, updating and maintaining information in databases and spreadsheets and prepare reports. Compile, organize and track various records
- Assist in resolving programming bugs in the Culvert Inspection Database, using MS Visual Basic programming, and other duties as necessary.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
This Student Assistant position will be working remotely or telecommuting until further notice.
Due to COVID-19, the student will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
