Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Engineering Technician position is located in Topeka, KS and is within the Bureau of Construction and Materials. The main purpose of this position is to perform tests and procedures on all samples of asphalt, and related materials according to standard procedures.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Tests and evaluates samples submitted to the subsection on Performance Graded Asphalt Binders, Cutback Asphalts, Emulsified Asphalts, Asphalt Rejuvenating Agents, and other related materials.
  • Assist in testing samples of Hot Joint Sealing Compounds, Asphalt Cores, and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). Consults with the subsection supervisor, to determine that the appropriate testing is performed on each sample according to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), or the Kansas Department of Transportation methods.
  • Maintains first-hand knowledge of the status of each sample as it progresses through the subsection. In case a material exhibits borderline properties, and after verification of the borderline property, in conjunction with the supervisor, evaluates and decides if further testing needs to be done on materials to adequately evaluate them for their intended purpose.
  • Helps train others in the section and for the Engineering Technician progression program in the subsection.
  • Assists in scheduling the workload of the subsection and supervising the subsection in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Stays abreast with current computer software changes. Uses general computer skills necessary related to documentation, reports and/or CMS data entry, online training, registrations and other applications.
