The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the largest community college district in the United States and is one of the largest in the world. Through an innovative partnership between LADWP and Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI), LACCD will have the Energize Colleges Fellow work to drive forward campus sustainability efforts through programs focused on transportation emissions mitigation through outreach and education, measurement and verification of project targets, and improving occupant behavior. Through this grant opportunity, LACCD will be able to accelerate the specific decarbonization efforts at Harbor College, and use this project as a proof of concept to scale up and replicate at the other colleges in due time.
The Fellow’s responsibilities will include:
- Measuring the emissions impacts of their work in transportation and other emissions categories.
- Encourage the campus community to change or adjust their commuting habits by focusing on reducing the carbon impacts related to transportation, including a focus on electric vehicles, transit options, active transportation options (bicycling, walking), and other alternative modes of transportation. This includes planning and programming education initiatives to shift commuter preferences towards using of active transportation, zero-emission vehicles, or public transportation, and away from single-occupant combustion vehicles.
- Establishing a baseline carbon inventory for the college and continuously measuring changes based on project activities.
- Institutionalizing their efforts by delivering a manual or standard operating procedure to scale and replicate this work at other colleges in LACCD.
- Seek out partners and establish relationships on campus and with stakeholders and stakeholder groups to include feedback from campus community on projects and efforts
- Recruit intern candidates from the campus to apply for paid student internship positions supporting the fellow’s efforts, then serve as the team lead for interns with these and related projects at Harbor College, including tracking of intern projects’ progress and documentation and assist program reporting by developing narratives and metrics to measure progress.
- Coordinate with LACCD and LADWP staff to collect and report metrics and key performance indicators to measure and assess the success of the projects supported by the fellowship
Other projects in collaboration with Fellows in the district may include:
- Identifying and develop new opportunities to utilize the campus as a living lab for academic learning;
- Supporting Energize Colleges program tracking and reporting;
Desired Qualifications:
- An educational background in a sustainability related field (volunteer and internship experience will also be considered). While this is preferred, all candidates with experience in fulfilling responsibilities similar to the ones listed above are welcome to apply;
- An emerging understanding of (or desire to learn about) clean energy and transportation;
- Proactive and timely about meeting goals and deadlines
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) capable to engage diverse audiences (community outreach experience is desirable);
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
