General Statement of Job

The purpose of this class within the organization is to support the department by receiving, evaluating and dispatching police officers to emergency and non-emergency events by using the phone, radio and multiple computer systems, monitoring the safety of the officers, and handling all after-hours calls for additional department issues.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Work Schedule:
12 hour shifts rotating each week. 14 days a month.
Week One: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Week Two: Wednesday and Thursday
7am to 7pm and a 7pm to 7am on a 14 day rotating basis.

ELIGIBLE candidates will receive a Personal History Statement (PHS) to complete and return.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Essential Functions:
Serves as first point of contact for people calling the police and/or coming into the police station; handles routine information and requests such as vehicle registrations, driving records, reports of abandoned vehicles, directions to other locations; makes referrals to appropriate resources; determines the nature and location of emergencies; responds to more serious calls such as domestic violence involving children, malicious wound occurrence, suicides, mental disorders, and hostage negotiations; checks for wants and warrants on suspects, runaways, and stolen vehicles utilizing the computer systems.
Dispatches officers; uses the computer aided dispatch system; runs criminal/suspect/vehicle information through VCIN while officers are en route; interprets and relays results to officers, such as an outstanding warrant or other vital information that could affect the officers' safety; uses main and backup radio systems and decides when to switch channels; monitors the police mutual aid radio.
Determines degree of safety threats to officers and the public; provides the appropriate response such as number of officers, appropriate outside resources (fire, rescue, or public works); and notifies other town personnel as needed.
Uses VCIN terminal to enter such information as missing and wanted persons, stolen articles and vehicles, and to run criminal histories; uses VCIN or NLETS to share information with other police departments, ICE, and fire and rescue.

Additional Duties :
Monitors multiple (15 plus) security cameras, emergency alert and emergency weather systems.
Trains new employees on VCIN/NCIC and LinX NCR and performs necessary re-certifications for existing employees.
Monitors equipment for functional performance.
Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in Administrative Office Practices, Communication, Computer Applications, Psychology, Human Relations, Police Science or closely related area.
Requires six months full time computer aided dispatch, public safety radio systems, customer service, administrative support or closely related experience.

Must be either a United States Citizen or have been lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must successfully obtain certification by Virginia State Police as a VCIN Terminal Operator.
Must successfully obtain certification by DCJS as a Dispatcher.
