Job Description

Director of Clinical Practicum/Placement

The Director of Clinical Practicum/Placement provides the leadership and management for the Clinical
Placement staff. The Director coordinates all aspects of student clinical placement, monitors and ensures
100% compliance with program accreditation standards, State Board of Nursing Rules, and campus requirements for faculty and students. In addition, the Director is responsible for ensuring students are in full compliance and meet all clinical hours as required in the respective nursing degree plans.

The Director must effectively communicate and maintain relationships with community healthcare agencies to facilitate student clinical experiences that meet course clinical objectives. These relationships assure development of a timely, effective student schedule for clinical rotations and contribute to efficient scheduling of didactic, lab, and simulation sessions.

The Director of Clinical Practicum/Placement also works to continuously improve scheduling and curriculum effectiveness, hires, orients, evaluates and mentors adjunct/clinical faculty, maintains records of completion of clinical requirements of faculty and students, and arranges for emergency coverage of clinical classes when the original instructor is unavailable. The Director supervises Clinical Office staff.
This position reports to the Dean of Nursing Education Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Professional Behavior o Demonstrates proper respect for students, and has student-friendly manner. o Works effectively as part of the overall faculty team and demonstrates positive interpersonal relations, collaborates with faculty members to meet student needs, participates in faculty meetings and program committees and responds to requests from management. o Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Faculty Development and Program Support o Establishes course schedules for faculty and students for each term including clinical assignments and rotations. This may include contributing to development of lab, simulation, and didactic schedules. Notifies students and faculty as soon as possible of any changes in schedule or assignments. o Coordinates student and faculty orientation at clinical sites o Assists clinical faculty in addressing students’ abilities to assume clinical assignments, including, but not limited to, educational preparedness and physical, mental, and emotional behaviors. o Orients, mentors, and evaluates clinical faculty. o Directs and coordinates the work of the Clinical Facilitators and Clinical Operations

Manager. o Attends faculty meetings and departmental meetings, and participates appropriately on program committees, communicating effectively to facilitate operations. o Provides meaningful input into strategic and fiscal planning. o Adheres to all policies, procedures, and expectations stated in college catalog, student, faculty and employee handbooks.

  • Clinical Site Resource Development o Promotes a positive image and reputation of the nursing program in the classroom, academic community, healthcare community, and community at large. Networks to establish contacts with employers and potential clinical partners in the community. o Coordinates and communicates on an ongoing basis with clinical sites throughout the community to schedule clinical experiences which fit effectively with course objectives. o Evaluates each clinical site for its appropriateness for meeting student learning needs, course outcomes, and program outcomes in collaboration with the Dean of Nursing

Education Programs, Program Directors, and nursing faculty. o Conducts routine visits to the clinical sites to observe and document the performance of clinical faculty and students to confirm that objectives are being met and to assess the clinical facilities’ satisfaction with faculty and students’ performance. o Coordinates, plans, and implements a process of demonstrating appreciation to clinical facilities and staff for their involvement in the nursing education program. o Regularly monitors and tracks all admissions and preclinical requirements, including inspection of a random sample of actual student files. o For each student that completes a clinical and/or laboratory component, assures that before a grade is given the student has achieved requisite hours in accordance with the approved nursing degree plan. o Ascertains that there is appropriate backup documentation to support any clinical laboratory or simulation time entered into Campus Vue. o Monitors student absences to assure that the student did not violate the published allowable absence policy for clinical, lab, and simulation experiences, and ensures that all absences are made up so that 100% of requisite time is achieved and documented. o For each student clinical experience, assures that appropriate evaluation forms have been timely received, that they cover all relevant competency points, indicate the name of the course, indicate the site name and has student and faculty signatures and dates. o Regularly monitors and confirms that all clinical affiliation agreements are maintained, fully executed, and current. o Confirms that each clinical site for where students participate is properly evaluated. o Makes certain that all clinical experiences are adequately scheduled.

  • Professional Development Plan o Attends workshops and in-service education aimed at earning the necessary CEU’s as applicable for license requirements and professional growth. o Exhibits competency in clinical skills at all levels of the program. o Has Master of Nursing with doctoral degree in nursing degree or education/health related area preferred

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current unencumbered license in the State of Colorado or multistate privilege to practice in the State
  • An earned master’s degree in nursing
  • Ability to act as a catalyst for creative change, organizational development, and program quality/efficiency
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proven problem solving ability and attention to detail
  • Teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to assist and motivate students
  • Successfully completes criminal background check and drug screening, maintains required immunizations, current CPR and HIPPA certifications

Classification

The Director of Clinical Practicum/ Placement is an exempt, full-time position. Work hours may vary daily and evening and weekend hours may be required, depending on the staffing needs of the College.

Travel: Travel to local, out-of-state and potential international sites to visit current and potential nursing clinical sites.

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires physical mobility throughout the facility. To perform the essential competencies and responsibilities of the position, the Director of Clinical Placement is frequently required to: sit, bend, kneel, reach, stand for long periods, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate computers and/or audiovisual equipment. The Director may also occasionally be required to lift, push, pull, carry, or support patients or materials.
