Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigators Dr. Maghboeba Mosavel and Dr. Jessica LaRose, this individual will assume primary responsibility for coordinating all community facing aspects of a clinical trial to promote cardiometabolic health. This trial is the result of a decade of community-based participatory research and all activities will be conducted in close partnership with residents and key stakeholders in Petersburg, VA. This role will serve as the primary liaison for the trial within the Petersburg community, overseeing community research staff, study implementation, community meetings, and data dissemination activities. This position will work closely with the Academic Clinical Research Coordinator to ensure regulatory and ethical compliance, as well as trial documentation.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Community Outreach and Engagement (40%):
o Task 1: Develop collaborations with diverse organizations in Petersburg City to facilitate partnership with VCU students, researchers, and programs to address community need and align with VCU’s community engagement goals.
o Task 2: Communicate regularly with Petersburg partners, Virginia State University, VCU stakeholders to collaboratively plan and address Petersburg specific needs.
o Task 3: Develop partnerships to address VCU’s community engagement specific strategic goals of partnerships, alignment, and impact.
o Task 4: Primary team member to liaise with the community advisory board (CAB), managing all activities, data, and communication between meetings.
o Task 5: Plan and coordinate all community facing meetings for the research study, including data dissemination activities.
  • Research Coordination (40%):
o Task 1: Work closely with the Academic Clinical Research Coordinator on compliance and regulatory issues, including but not limited to: maintaining trial binders, ensuring that all federal / state / local requirements are followed, and that ethical obligations are upheld.
o Task 2: Manage and coordinate all community facing aspects of this clinical trial, including but not limited to: recruitment of trial participants per study manual of procedures and overseeing trial implementation in Petersburg to ensure compliance with all requirements.
o Task 3: Assist with preparation of study related materials (e.g., intervention materials, materials for CAB meetings).
o Task 4: Coordinate the development and implementation of all training sessions for community research staff, also known as Wellness Ambassadors.
  • Personnel Management (20%):
o Task 1: Recruitment, retention, and management of community research staff, also known as Wellness Ambassadors

Minimum Qualifications
Required Hiring Standards:
  • BA/BS required with a degree in health sciences or related field
  • Previous experience training and supervising staff
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organization, time management, and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity as evidenced by their previous training, work experience, and / or community service
  • Demonstrated ability to work with youth and families across a broad spectrum of socioeconomic background and lived experiences
  • Ability to work well independent and as part of a team
  • Flexibility with work hours to include evenings and weekends as needed
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Hiring Standards:
  • Prefer master’s degree in health sciences, social work, psychology, counseling, or related field
  • Resident of Petersburg, Virginia given that is the community where the research, outreach and partnerships will take place
  • Previous experience as a research coordinator, conducting lifestyle interventions.
  • Prior experience working as part of a community-engaged research study.
