The Chief Financial Officer is a member of the President/CEO’s senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership for all financial aspects of the organization, including accounting systems, financial analysis, internal controls system, annual external audit, budget process, procedures, IT systems, and contractual arrangements.
Under the direction of the President and CEO, and in collaboration with the senior leadership team, the Chief Financial Officer directs the development and analysis of financial and information services, processes and systems for the YMCA of Southern Maine in accordance with Our Mission, Our Promise, and Strategic Plan, ensuring the highest level of quality and accuracy.
Essential Functions and Expectations: Using a collaborative approach, provide guidance and leadership for the organization, including:
- Operational Effectiveness: Possesses strong strategic and critical thinking skills. Creates a structure to deliver organization-wide results to achieve objectives. Demonstrates and sustains the Y’s nonprofit operational model. Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform successfully. Uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.
- Oversees the hiring, training, accountability, development and supervision of the Finance team.
- Ensures all accounting procedures are in accordance with GAAP.
- Ensures monthly financial reports are delivered with the highest level of accuracy and submitted to the CEO on a timely basis.
- Under direction of the CEO’s vision and Association’s strategic goals, oversees the annual budgeting process to ensure accurate budgets.
- Manages cash flow of YMCA, including collections and receivables, to ensure proper liquidity and adequate return within the risk deemed acceptable by the organization.
- Ensures financial records are properly maintained and internal controls are in place, communicated, and consistently implemented to across the Association.
- Represents organization in financial audits.
- Provides financial analysis and strategy.
- Oversees YMCA information technology infrastructure and contracts, ensuring quality, reliable and secure systems.
- Collaboration: Advocates for and institutionalizes inclusion and diversity throughout the organization. Communicates to engage and inspire people within and outside the YMCA. Ensures that all levels of staff understand their role in our Association’s financial success.
- Cultivates ongoing working relationships with representatives of the organization’s banking services, auditors, and other finance-related partnerships.
- Serves as a committed and collaborative member of the Senior Leadership Team, identifying the Senior Leadership Team as their top priority.
- Mission Advancement: Ensures the Y’s mission, values, vision, and strategies are prioritized in their work. Ensures community engagement; promotes the global nature of the Y. Supports a culture of volunteerism and philanthropy.
- Serves as staff leader, with CEO, to the Finance and Endowment Committees.
- Performs special projects as directed by the CEO.
- Supports the annual fundraising campaign as requested.
- Adheres to all Y Brand guidelines and protocols.
- Other duties as required.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a financial, business administration or related field; Master’s degree and/or CPA certification preferred.
- Five or more years of professional leadership experience in financial management (nonprofit experience preferred).
- Ability to build genuine, respectful relationships and quickly establish credibility with people from all socio-economic segments and levels of leadership, and all dimensions of diversity.
- Ability to read and understand complex documents, including federal and state regulations, legal documents and financial reports and to apply principles of logical or financial thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables; capacity to solve practical problems and design and implement work processes.
- Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups and the board of directors, verbally and in writing.
- A criminal background check is required and may include fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire.
- The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Salary Range:$100,000 - $110,000 yearly
