After the loss of vision, a consumer may need to explore new job opportunities and will need assistance with learning how to engage in resume writing, job searching and interviewing skills. The careers teacher directly addresses these skills individually developing a plan for each consumer to help them find gainful employment improving their quality of life. Specific teaching assignments will be individualized, and change based on the needs of each consumer.
Job responsibilities include the following:
- Provide focused instruction aligned with the consumer's Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE)
- Teach a curriculum that includes interview skills, soft skills, how to get and keep a job, when and if someone should disclosure a disability, and understanding an individual’s rights under the ADA
- Teach methods for obtaining employment which are applicable to the current job market.
- Instruct individuals how to create professional resumes and cover letters
- Instruct individuals how to utilize assistive technology, software packages, and computers to communicate, create e-mail accounts, conduct research on the web, complete job applications, and explore career opportunities aligned with their Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE)
- Differentiate instructional strategies and content to effectively teach individuals who have recently lost vision, as well as to individuals who have been blind, deaf-blind, or visually impaired for a significant time
- Complete assessments and develop lesson plans for assigned students enrolled in the careers class
- Compose verbal and timely written reports of student progress in the case management system
- Work collaboratively with Center teachers and staff to assist consumers with achieving their academic or professional goals
- The careers teacher will be responsible for participating on the interdisciplinary team which includes assisting during mealtimes, attending planning meetings, and attending in-service trainings
- Teach individuals from a variety of backgrounds and with various learning styles and readiness levels

- Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
- Bachelor's degree or above in teaching in the visual impairment field (TVI) or special education, technology, secondary education, or other related field with the ability to become NC Teacher certified within 2 years of hire.
- Experience in teaching job readiness skills, resume writing, interview skills, and the ability to teach students how to create online profiles for job search engines
Eligible for a Vocational Education license with or eligible to receive a
license level of one of the following: V. Requires Bachelor’s degree in
related field and/or relevant trade experience.
