Position Summary
The Associate Director of Campus Recreation (Recreation Services) is responsible for a comprehensive Campus Recreation operation and designated programs. Primary duties include the development, implementation, and supervision of open/informal recreation and sports, esport gaming center, member & guest services, marketing/promotions, special events; management and supervision of facilities; the department’s student employee leadership and DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusion) training and development program; assessment initiatives related to student development, retention, and academic success; and department risk education/safety.
This position is directly responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and use of space, with an emphasis in teaching students’ leadership skills and competencies related to event and program planning and implementation, equipment and facility use, safe delivery of physical activity, special events, and use of Campus Recreation spaces. The Associate Director is responsible for the development and implementation of approved facility policies and procedures and for interpreting administrative policy for users of the facilities.
The Associate Director provides guidance, supervision, and leadership to staff in the implementation and use of relevant technology, software systems, and fitness and recreational equipment, and ensures exceptional customer service and support is provided to all students, staff/faculty, and patrons utilizing Campus Recreation programs, facilities, and services. The position is further expected to effectively develop and manage program and membership sales, operational budgets, and work collaboratively with University Enterprise and Campus Operations to ensure Campus Recreation facilities are safe, clean, relevant environments for students and patrons to engage safely in Campus Recreation programs and services.
Facility operations include the Student Recreation Center, Sherrill Center Fitness and designated recreation managed studios and spaces, intramural field, two satellite residential fitness centers, and a 9-hole disc golf course. The Associate Director is responsible for managing all facility schedules and corrective/restorative actions for all regular and deferred facility maintenance and/or repair.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
This position requires post baccalaureate credentials and/or equivalent education and independent experience. May consider a bachelor’s degree in recreational administration with 5-7 years of progressive recreation programming and fitness/recreation facility management experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, or related field and 3 years of progressive recreation programming and fitness/recreation facility management experience in a higher education environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This position requires knowledge of recreation procedures, ability to supervise others, computer skills necessary to perform job functions and ability to learn new software systems such as EMS, IMLeagues, and other point of sale or esport game center management systems, ability to perform detailed work and make decisions under pressure.
Ability to manage multiple projects and people simultaneously, outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.
Knowledge of facility management and risk management procedures and practices.
Ability to effectively execute budgeting and accounting responsibilities.
This position also requires knowledge in the areas of fitness and recreation facility management, fitness equipment, esport gaming, student leadership development, EDI (equity, diversity, and Inclusion) training and assessment in a higher education environment.
