General Description

The Assistant Pool Manager works directly with the Pool Manager to oversee the safe operation of assigned seasonal pool facility, including supervising pool personnel and overseeing facility cleaning procedures. This individual monitors and oversees assigned pool deck, including lifeguard rotations and coverage, and ensures facility safety and cleanliness. This position works directly under Pool Manager and Senior Pool Manager and under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Safety:

  • Works with pool managers to ensure the safe and proper operation of assigned outdoor pool facilities; ensures all facility rules and safety guidelines are posted and followed; reports breaches of rules as necessary
  • Monitors pool deck and facility for cleanliness and safety concerns and responds with appropriate measures as needed
  • Administers first aid and makes rescues, as necessary
  • Aids in responding to incidents and emergency situations and completes required documents for adequate record keeping


Maintenance:

  • Monitors pool facility for safety and/or cleanliness concerns and submits maintenance requests as needed
  • Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples
  • Monitors inventory of cleaning supplies and first aid supplies and notifies Senior Pool Manager when items need to be replenished
  • Ensures pool facilities and surrounding areas are cleaned and sanitized properly


Administrative:

  • Answers phone, makes announcements, and communicates updates to pool patrons as needed
  • Assists with registering patrons for pool memberships, swim lessons, and other aquatic programs; troubleshoots equipment malfunctions
  • Handles patron complaints and concerns effectively and with consideration, using good public relation skills; addresses and responds to patron disciplinary issues on pool deck
  • Assists and attends all staff trainings and in-service trainings throughout season
  • Completes daily cleaning checklist, assigns cleaning tasks to pool staff, and assists where needed
  • Acts in capacity of pool manager if required


Staff:

  • Assists with training and instructing pool staff as outlined by management, including but not limited to, staff safety trainings and in-service meetings
  • Supervises and monitor all pool personnel ensuring staff is uniformed correctly, proper safety equipment is being carried, and lifeguard skills are being practiced effectively and efficiently
  • Aware of, abides to, and enforces the Pool Personnel Policies and City of De Pere Policies
  • Substitutes for lifeguards or pool managers as needed during staffing shortages and/or conflicts
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR techniques and proper use of AED
  • Instruction of swimming skills for lessons
  • Prevention of accidents related to and around a pool and pool facilities
  • City of De Pere’s policies, procedures, and emergency action plans
  • Pool Facility Policies and Regulations; guidelines related to aquatic industry in accordance with the Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection
  • Basic pool chemical testing techniques and maintenance operations


Skills & Ability to:

  • Work in team-based environment to achieve common goals
  • Motivate staff to develop necessary job related skills to improve job performance
  • Effectively train and supervise assigned personnel, including scheduling and distributing work
  • Conduct and analyze water chemistry tests to ensure proper water safety conditions
  • Maintain accurate records and submit necessary reports
  • Perform lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and AED techniques
  • Exercise tact, maintain composure and professionalism and use good judgement in resolving disputes and differences arising between the general public and/or employees
  • Troubleshoot and resolve wide variety of issues, scheduling conflicts, personnel issues, behavioral issues, customer service complaints
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public, employees, and community leaders
  • Promote and enforce safety and health regulations
  • Handle emergency situations effectively and efficiently
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures
  • Use computers and related program and registration software
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Work outdoors in varying summer weather conditions and lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Work as necessary on days, nights, weekends, and holidays during the pool operating season

Minimum Requirements & Physical Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 17 years of age.
  • Valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications or equivalent training.
  • Lifeguard experience required; swim instruction experience preferred.
