Broad Scope & Function
Assistant Engineers provide engineering support and advice services for applied research projects conducted by the Office of Water Programs on environmental engineering problems. This position includes civil, environmental, and water resources engineering specialties. The Assistant Engineer is involved in physical planning and construction, administration and conduct of research, and dissemination of results.
This position assists research staff engineers at OWP in planning, organizing, and/or performing the work of the research engineering staff; represents OWP at meetings and conferences involving campus, university, private, state, and federal entities in matters related to the subject research; and manages projects and assures the quality of the products of the group.
Reporting Relationship
This position reports directly and receives general direction from the Associate Director of Research for the Office of Water Programs or their designee.

Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, exempt from overtime, benefited position, covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Sacramento State requires all campus employees, including auxiliary employees, to be fully vaccinated, including a booster, against COVID-19 unless they have a qualifying exemption.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participates in multi-entity research projects, including liaison between University researchers, contractors, and outside agencies and consultants.
- Prepares engineering analysis and background work that is needed to design, implement, and complete research projects.
- Assists in analysis and support of contractors to incorporate research findings in design and implementation of environmental and water resources projects.
- Assists in preparing reports and presentations of findings to University groups, contractors, and other interested parties.
- Participates in conferences and workshops to transmit research results.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related discipline.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability in interpreting and analyzing environmental laws and regulations including Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
- Demonstrated knowledge of monitoring and analysis of natural and engineered environmental systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the characteristics and impacts of point and non-point source pollution.
- Demonstrated ability to manage environmental applied research programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary research group.
- Demonstrated ability to review and edit technical project reports and documents.
- Demonstrated ability to present information and results in conferences and meetings.
- Must be legally eligible to drive in California and be acceptable for vehicle insurance coverage under the University Enterprises insurance plan. Must continue to meet the established driving standards.
- Must pass a background check, which may include fingerprinting. Must continue to meet the established standards.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods of time; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copy machines, fax machines, scanners, and printers. Site visits require ability to walk up and stand on steep earthen and vegetated slopes.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors at project locations; continuous contact with staff, campus community, the public, and government agencies; requires travel to project sites, coordination meetings, and conferences.
