EMPLOYMENT TERMS: As needed to teach courses in Nursing

PRIMARY DUTY: The Nursing program is seeking candidates to serve as adjunct instructor in online nursing courses in the RN to BSN and MSN programs. The nursing adjunct instructors will work directly with the Director of Nursing and program faculty to develop and/or teach courses in the on-line RN to BSN or MSN tracks (nurse executive/administration or nurse educator). The position requires the ability to effectively deliver online curriculum in a manner that actively engages students, ensures academic rigor, and provides timely communication and feedback. Specific teaching assignments will be determined based on the expertise of the candidate. Adjunct instructors will be expected to attend virtual meetings with the program faculty and staff monthly or as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Develop and teach courses within the on-line nursing program as assigned.
  • Develop course syllabi, lesson plans, and associated materials for effective on-line delivery.
  • Effectively utilize and manage on-line course delivery systems, tools, and techniques.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement of instruction through the identification and implementation of best practices.
  • Model effective oral and written communication that engages students, provides clarity, and improves student learning.
  • Attend nursing program meetings with the program director and faculty as requested.
  • Ensure the content of course materials and assessment tools correspond with course and program learning outcomes.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in program curriculum design and evaluation as necessary to ensure compliance with the Missouri Department of Higher Education, the Higher Learning Commission, the Missouri Nursing Practice Act, and accrediting agencies.
  • Aid in the update of a systematic program evaluation, which outline program outcomes and competencies.
  • Develop effective relationships with faculty, students, and partner agencies.
  • Ensure that student records are gathered and maintained as required and in a manner that ensures confidentiality and FERPA compliance.
  • Meet guidelines set forth by the Missouri Nursing Practice Act for approved nursing programs.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics and perform other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Attend advisory committee meetings when available.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Adjunct teaching in the RN to BSN Program:
Education: Master’s degree in Nursing
Certification/License: RN, Missouri Nursing License or a Nursing License held in a compact state
Experience: At least three years of experience in an academic nursing environment as an instructor with at least one year of experience in teaching online courses; at least one year of experience as a practicing RN
Skills: Proficient in online learning technologies; exceptional written and verbal communication; exceptional time management and organizational skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS for Adjunct teaching in the RN to BSN Program:
Education: Doctorate in Nursing or related field
Experience: At least five years of experience in an academic nursing environment as an instructor with at least one year of experience in teaching online courses; at least three years of experience as a practicing RN; working knowledge of accreditation procedures
Skills: Proficient in Canvas learning management system (LMS) and other online learning technologies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Adjunct teaching in the MSN Program:
Education: Master’s degree in Nursing and evidence that a doctorate degree in a related field will be completed in one year
Certification/License: RN, Missouri Nursing License or a Nursing License held in a compact state
Experience: At least three years of experience in an academic nursing environment as an instructor with at least one year of experience in teaching online courses; at least one year of experience as a practicing RN
Skills: Proficient in online learning technologies; exceptional written and verbal communication; exceptional time management and organizational skills
Adjunct Graduate Faculty Must Have:


  • At least 60 hours of graduate work including 18 hours in subfield related to that course
  • For non-required or elective courses, when faculty are not available and when the individual’s record of professional experience, specialized graduate work and honors and/or awards support their competence, an individual with a minimum of a master’s degree may be approved
  • Suitable experience which will be documented in the recommendation for appointment form for review by the Graduate Council and Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Special Programs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS for Adjunct teaching in the MSN Program:
Education: Doctorate in Nursing or related field
Experience: At least five years of experience in an academic nursing environment as an instructor with at least one year of experience in teaching online courses; at least three years of experience as a practicing RN; working knowledge of accreditation procedures
Skills: Proficient in Canvas learning management system (LMS) and other online learning technologies

WORKING CONDITIONS: The majority of work will be conducted in the online arena; however, the faculty member will be expected to meet with students at times that are conducive to their schedule using zoom web conferencing or phone. The faculty member’s work environment should be conducive to productivity and student privacy.

EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Laptop or Desktop computer, Canvas LMS, Zoom web conferencing, and other on-line learning technologies

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
