Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of a Maintenance Unit Supervisor, the welder performs skilled journey level welding tasks in the maintenance, repair and fabrication of equipment and fixtures, using electric arc, oxyacetylene, and heli-arc welding methods. Emphasis on maintenance/repair vs. fabrication activities and the different types of welding methods varies according to facilities at which the incumbents are located. Incumbents may work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather with other journey level classes, but as part a cooperative team effort, rather than in a lead capacity.
- Makes structural repairs to fixtures such as handrails, steel stairwells, hatch doors, tunnel booths, bronze doors (e.g. standpipe doors), support columns, poles and light bases, switch points and boiler pipes, which can withstand resultant hear and high pressure doors;
- Repairs blades, frames, bodies, tanks, axle housings and doors on snowplows, trucks and other mobile or automotive equipment;
- Modifies vehicles through the fabrication and/or installation of hydraulic tailgates, special bumpers and towing devices, snowplow devices and salt spreaders;
- Plans and lays out work from drawings, blueprints or other written specifications. Determines the proper sequence of work operations for each job and welds all types of joints using established methods;
- Tempers steal, lays out guidelines of metal parts and cuts metal with cutting torch. Cuts and fits material in preparation for welding and may repair truck bodies, frames, tanks, gears and axle housings on mobile or automotive equipment;
- May perform sheet metal duties and make repairs to metal tools and equipment. Perform minor repairs in maintaining welding equipment and sets up and maintains all equipment involved in cutting or welding operations.
The Port Authority operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round. Welders work a 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts, days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays, and during inclement weather and emergencies. Welders work at our various Port Authority facilities throughout the NY/NJ area.
Qualifications:
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.- Three (3) years full-time paid work experience in the welding/mechanical trade at the semi-skilled level or above.
- Licensing/Certification Required at the time of hire are listed below:
- New York Fire Department Certificate of Fitness required at the time of hire.
- A Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or permit with Air Brakes, Tank Vehicle.
- New York City Certificate of Qualification for structural welding or the equivalent.
- Port Authority or PATH employees, are not eligible to apply to this posting and must apply to this position internally.
Testing:
Applicants under consideration will be contacted via email for testing.
Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a in the assessment process which consists of written and a practical exam.
Written Test: A written test will measure the candidate’s basic knowledge in areas such as: Print Reading; Welding Processes; Types of Welds; Types of Joints; Welding Positions; Filler Metals; Processes Related to Welding; Welding Metals; Welding Defects; Repair Welding Surfaces and Tools, Machines, & Equipment.
Performance Test: A performance test will measure the candidate’s ability to safely use oxyacetylene equipment and to use gas metal arc and shielded metal arc welding to complete a groove and fillet weld test. Position types include 3F, 4F, 2G, 3G, 4G, 6G positions as defined in the current AWS specifications.
Candidates who qualify on the practical exam will be eligible to be offered a position as they become available. Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background and medical check and will be asked to provide copies of the required licenses for verification.

- Starting Salary: $44.31 hourly/ 92,185 yearly (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
