Vice President, US Inclusion and Culture Job at HSBC

This role may be performed at one of HSBC's primary US locations: New York City, NY, Buffalo, NY, Chicago, IL.

Continuing to build on the work of inclusion, diversity, equity and culture, this role will be a senior member of the Inclusion, Diversity and Culture team reporting to the Senior Vice President of the function. In addition to managing a small team, you will develop strategies, design solutions, and deploy programs to guide and support the businesses and functions related to hiring, retaining, developing, and promoting talent equitably across the organization. Through influence, design, and partnership you will have a set of mostly internal stakeholders and be part of the Human Resources team and collaborate with the Sustainability, Procurement, Communications, Legal teams to deliver out our six pillar strategy. Your primary responsibility with be the US, and you will closely work with the global Inclusion, Diversity and Culture team across regions to align our work. You will represent us across select external-facing groups to represent the company and engage across our partner organizations.

Here’s what you can expect from the role:

  • Develop and implement programs to achieve US-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion goals for HSBC employees to feel they belong and have equitable access to opportunities
  • Engage with client partners of all levels to ensure the Inclusion Strategy is supported across each business/function
  • Create communications to support local and global campaigns
  • Partner with external program vendors in an organized, timely and professional manner
  • Lead cross business and function committees and/or working groups on Culture, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion topics
  • Consult with various advisory teams (i.e. US Executive Committee members, Employee Resource Group Advisory Board members, etc.) engaged in implementing enterprise change
  • Represent HSBC with select trade association groups with respect to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Identify opportunities for HSBC to take a leadership position in recruiting, retaining, and promoting a diverse workforce
  • Engage with business and function partners on client outreach and strategies specific to and with intent to grow our diverse client base
  • Engage with Corporate Sustainability on efforts to position and expand our giving efforts and partnership with under-represented communities and female/minority owned businesses
  • Partner to enhance our supplier diversity program and efforts with the establishment of key metrics for improvement
  • At times act as the deputy for the Head of Inclusion and Culture in engagement with the US Executive Team and HSBC Board engagement
  • Develop and conduct presentations to various leaders on Inclusion & Culture

Regulatory and legislative requirements

  • Provide development and implementation of Affirmative Action Plans
  • Provide recommendations and expertise with respect to affirmative action plans and goals that are realistic and actionable
  • Provide strategic guidance on audit requirements as needed
  • Monitor emerging regulatory issues, and ensure implications are clearly understood by key stakeholders
  • Identify and escalate key risks resulting from HSBC’s diversity & inclusion practices (or the absence thereof)

Policy and governance

  • Develop and implement diversity & inclusion (D&I) policies and programs consistent with strategy to attract, retain and promote diverse workforce
  • Develop and implement in partnership with key stakeholders in Procurement, Sustainability and CRA – the advancement of our efforts with supplier diversity, vendors, and community relations

Data analytics, monitoring & measurement

  • Support accurate and timely reporting on progress towards HSBC’s diversity & inclusion goals; analyze data, monitor progress, and provide results & recommendations senior leaders
  • Benchmark industry best practices to support strategies and evaluate US-wide progress in creating a diverse and inclusive workforce

Internal Relationship management

  • Establish strong collaborative relationships with HR Business Partners and determine how to best achieve a diverse & inclusive culture within their teams
  • Engage with business leadership and Communications team to drive D&I related messages throughout the US
  • Partner with Recruitment team to implement and monitor effective diverse recruitment sources for achieving representational goals
  • Provide consultation and support to committees/groups such as ERG Advisory Boards to determine unique requirements and alignment to US-wide initiatives
  • Partner with Corporate Sustainability team to ensure efforts are aligned and ERG members are optimally engaged

External Relationship management

  • Interface with external organizations to develop partnerships and further developing D&I ambitions for Attraction/Recruitment and Engagement/Retention
  • Support the external diversity surveys completions
  • Oversee and manage key strategic relationships and key events


Administration

  • Support US D&I budget management
  • Support strategy, initiatives, communications, and budget of Employee Resource Groups; includes engagement with executive sponsors, ERG governance and alignment to global efforts
  • Provide consultation on new/enhanced actions to support strategy such as Ally program, Returning Parents, Mental Health Awareness, Coaching Circles, and efforts to increase business and client engagement

Training& Development

  • Oversee and manage participation in D&I sponsored programs (i.e. Taking the Stage, ELC, new Columbia University program)
  • Oversee and manage the implementation of US D&I Learning initiatives (i.e. unconscious bias e-learning)
  • Establish additional awareness programs to enhance the knowledge level of all employees on diversity and inclusion and cultural awareness

For this role, HSBC targets a fixed pay range between $175,000 and $250,000.


The final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and a number of variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.

The qualifications listed below will demonstrate how one’s skills and experiences lend itself to being a US leader in Diversity and Inclusion. Not all of these skills are required but we are interested in hearing how your mix of these skills make you qualified to deliver for HSBC!

  • Functional Expertise - Successful track record of delivering a suite of HR, business, and preferably Inclusion & Culture / Diversity & Inclusion interventions. Examples of areas of expertise could be recruiting, talent development, leading D&I programs, leading Employee/Business Resource Groups, etc.
  • Corporate Exposure - Extensive HR or relevant business experience within a fast-moving, complex, and demanding corporate environments where operational diversity and inclusion issues have to be handled on a large scale, and with a need to multitask and deal with ambiguity.
  • Operating in global markets - Experience of working at an operational level in international environments which drive a true international perspective.
  • Commercial experience in different markets and cultures, with demonstrable experience driving people engagement, motivation and creating a culture of inclusion
  • Managing Change - Experience of working on transformation and/or change programs across dispersed entities. Experience of working with senior teams on restructuring and re-engineering, e.g. following mergers and acquisitions.
  • Exposure to Corporate Governance - Experience of diverse regulatory frameworks in large multi nationals.
  • Commercial Awareness - Demonstrate up to date knowledge of the external environment, the competitive landscape, and broad macro-economic trends.
  • Possess an understanding of how to use this knowledge to create competitive advantage, bring traditionally siloed functional specialists together and to think holistically about human capital and organizational culture.
  • Consultancy Exposure - Experience of, or exposure to, leading consultancies that set stretch benchmarks.
  • Engagement or leadership in trade association councils or other organizations where cross-industry insights and best practices on Diversity & Inclusion.
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion certifications or recognitions.
  • Executive Presence – High business acumen and the ability to discuss complex issues and potential solution in a clear and concise manner.

Desirable Experience/Knowledge:

  • Financial Management - Experience of managing departmental finances, major supplier negotiations and contract management.
  • Process and Technology - Experience of delivering HR or business solutions through the design and application of process and technology.
  • Practitioner - Experience as a D&I practitioner
  • Leadership - Experience as a business of functional people leader
