DESCRIPTION:

Our Veterinary Technician Assistants work under the direction of a veterinarian to aid veterinary technicians in providing medical care to our shelter animals. Including but not limited to intake screening protocols, surgery, behavior, husbandry, and overall wellbeing of our animals. This position is an invaluable part of medical department. We are looking for employees who will bring their passion and unique skills to the table. Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary or shelter setting is preferred but not required, we are happy to train the right candidate. Pay is $16 to $20/hr. with plenty of opportunity for advancement. Full-time and Part-time positions available.

Under the direction of a veterinarian, assists the veterinary technicians in providing medical care to animals. Including but not limited to intake screening protocols, surgery, behavior, husbandry, and overall wellbeing of our animals. Time distribution of duties: Medical care (60%) Operational and Administrative support (20%) Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Communicates daily with the Shelter Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians
• Learn and understand basic medical terminology
• Low stress, safe, and effective handling of animals entering the shelter
• Determine age, sex, and breed
• Learn to identify sick or injured animals and report to technicians
• Medicate and provide basic husbandry of sick animals
• Obtain basic vitals of animals
• Assist in obtaining diagnostics (radiographs, blood work, cultures, etc.)
• Assist with surgery preparation, intra-op, and recovery
• Maintenance of equipment (anesthesia machine, surgery packs, etc.)
• Document medical exam findings, treatments, and procedures in Shelter Buddy software.
• Facilitate transfer of animals from intake or medical areas and into appropriate housing.
• Communicate effectively and facilitate collaboration between departments, including volunteers.
• Clean medical areas, kennels and cages as needed
• Re-stocking of medical supplies and maintenance of equipment
• Maintaining a clean and organized medical department
• Other job duties as assigned by the Shelter Veterinarian

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 18 years of age or older. Have good communication and basic computer skills. Able to work independently, manage time efficiently, multi-task and prioritize. Dependable, reliable, compassionate, and team player. High school diploma or GED. Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary or shelter setting is preferred but not required. Weekend availability required for most positions.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required. New hires must have one dose of a single-dose vaccine (J&J) or a first dose of a two-dose vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) by their first day of employment.
