I Level: $5,282 to $7,817 per month (SR-24, Step C to M)
II Level: $5,712 to $8,455 per month (SR-26, Step C to M)
III Level: $6,425 to $9,512 per month (SR-28, Step C to M)

Duties Summary

The immediate vacancy is located in the Livestock Disease Control Branch, Animal Industry Division of the Department of Agriculture. The Animal Industry Division assists Hawaii's livestock, poultry, and aquaculture industries through detection, management and control of pest and diseases; performs disease surveillance for livestock, poultry and aquatic species; maintains the State livestock brand registry; operates the Rabies quarantine Station and Honolulu International Airport Holding Facility; conducts aquaculture industry development activities; conducts investigations into violations of animal quarantine/importation statutes; and performs building and equipment repair and maintenance.

Veterinary Medical Officer I: Performs professional work in veterinary medicine at the basic level of competence; provides a variety of preventive or corrective medical services in the detection, control and eradication of animal diseases; may perform progressively responsible work in the regulatory, scientific and research aspects of the State's veterinary medical programs; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Veterinary Medical Officer Ii: Performs professional work in veterinary medicine; makes professional determinations on veterinary medical and technical problems; provides authoritative leadership on program activities in a district; may supervise lower-level veterinarians and/or non-veterinarian personnel; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Veterinary Medical Officer IIi: Performs professional work in veterinary medicine at a high level of professionalism in serving as program specialist; serves as an expert consultant in a recognized specialty; cooperates with other governmental jurisdictions, national and international, and with other government agencies on the detection, control and/or eradication of animal diseases; and performs other related duties as assigned.

This position requires inter-island and out-of-state travel; and may be required to work overtime, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

State of Hawaii Veterinarian License: Applicants must possess either: 1) a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii; or 2) a valid temporary permit to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii, provided that a permanent license is obtained within the six month probationary period.

Note: Applicants who do not currently possess a permanent license or temporary permit to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii may also apply. If you are selected for a position, the temporary permit must be obtained before starting employment, and a permanent license must be obtained within the six month probationary period.

Veterinary Experience:
Vet Med Officer I: None required.
Vet Med Officer II: Applicants must possess TWO (2) YEARS of responsible professional veterinary medicine experience.
Vet Med Officer III: Applicants must possess FOUR (4) YEARS of responsible professional veterinary medicine experience.

Examples of qualifying professional veterinary experience are as follows:
A. Detection, eradication and control of animal diseases through diagnosis, treatment, quarantine and established testing protocol.
B. Inspection of meat and meat products intended for human consumption. Also includes evaluation of disease problems and sanitation.
C. Study of the preventive control of animal diseases transmissible from animals to humans.
D. Post graduate research work that has demonstrated the ability to perform independent research in the field of veterinary medicine.
E. Veterinary quarantine work concerning rabies control.

Substitutions Allowed:
A. A master's degree in a pertinent veterinary field from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one year of Veterinary Experience.
B. A Ph.D. degree in a pertinent veterinary field from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for two years of Veterinary Experience.

Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Physical Ability: Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and objects weighing over 40 pounds assisted by another person and/or use of equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Other Requirements:
1) Must pass annual Medical Evaluation to use a respirator as required by the Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
2) Must be able to wear safety shoes as required and other required personal protection equipment as necessary.
3) This position requires inter-island and out-of-state travel; and may be required to work overtime, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.
