The Clinical Department at Central Austin office is looking for a Triage Nurse (LVN) to join the team!

The Triage LVN is responsible for triaging patient phone calls and/or walk-ins. The Triage LVN assesses patient needs and determines best course of action within scope of practice and utilizing medical provider input and expertise. The Triage MA will correctly relay Provider instructions to patients, and will ask appropriate questions when necessary. They will also manage and stay on top of all follow-up tasks.

The Triage Nurse (LVN) is responsible for triaging patient phone calls and/or walk-ins. The Triage Nurse assesses patient needs and determines best course of action within scope of practice while utilizing medical provider input and expertise. The Triage Nurse will correctly relay Provider instructions to patients, and will ask appropriate medical questions when necessary. They will also manage any follow-up tasks for the provider.

Essential Functions:

  • Follows all established triage policies and procedures while triaging patient medical needs for assigned provider(s). Assists walk-in patients with medical questions and needs.
  • Actively listens to patients’ medical concerns, gathers facts, dates and additional information to assess needs; follows protocols to determine next steps. Gathers orders from provider(s) on all pertinent situations to rely information to patient. May request emergency appointments for patients.
  • Communicates with patients via the patient portal.
  • Assists practitioners with the initial prescription process, including specialty medications. Communicates with insurance or pharmacy as needed. Handles and approves patient’s prescription needs including filling request and replacements. Provides patients with prescription samples.
  • Orders labs & radiology for patients as requested by practitioner.
  • Orders and coordinates specialty procedures including Cortrosyn Stimulation & OGT tests. Manages pre-authorization process for specialty procedures. Appropriately documents all procedures.
  • Provides intramuscular, subcutaneous injections. Educates patients & demonstrates on insertion of Libre Pro CGM sensors. Appropriately documents all injections and sensor insertions.
  • Completes any prep work needed for patient appointments. Explains procedures to patients. Explains diagnostic & lab imaging tests and procedures.
  • Charts all patient interactions in the electronic medical records (EMR) system. Corresponds with providers and coworkers via Taskman for patient needs.
  • Monitors Order Tracking board for instructions from Providers, to relay to patients.
  • Triages urgent/critical lab results before provider review

Additional Non-Essential Functions:

  • May conduct IV therapy as needed for clinical and research patients.
  • May serve as an educational resource for Triage Nurse staff when needed.
  • Collects and processes items from assigned provider outboxes.
  • Assists patients with paperwork requests and with information regarding medication and supply assistance.
  • Occasionally assists with lifting patients up to 50 pounds
  • Assists with triage scanning, faxes, and mail to patients.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements:

Required:

Graduate from an accredited nursing program; Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) required in the State of Texas; 1 year of prior nursing experience.

Preferred:

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program; Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) required in the State of Texas; 2 years of prior nursing experience. Prior triage, Endocrinology and /or Diabetes experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish

The passing of a competency test at interview is required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Professional medical office environment
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machine
  • Often uses standard medical equipment such as monofilament sticks, needles, syringes, stethoscopes, finger clips, blood pressure monitors, blood pressure cuffs
  • Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other substances expected in a clinical setting
  • Primarily on the phone and computer with some in-person patient contact
  • Well-lit, medium noise level environment
  • May occasionally assist with moving and/or lifting patients up to 50 pounds

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time time position. Days are scheduled Monday through Friday. Work hours may vary between the hours of 7:00AM to 5:30PM, depending on department requirements/manager agreement. Overtime may be required.

Salary:

Occasional travel to other locations for coverage or training and development.
