Position Description

**$1,000 sign-on bonus. Half ($500) paid out on first paycheck. The second half ($500) paid out after 90 days of employment**

The purpose of this position is to maintain trees in city parks, grounds and roadways. This is accomplished by trimming, planting and removing trees, operating light and heavy equipment, aide in ensuring site safety for pedestrians and crew and responding to emergency after hours calls. Other duties include acting crew leader during emergency events, assisting with special projects, national disasters, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and assisting other departments as needed.

Typical Tasks

Maintain trees by removing dead and hazardous limbs; pruning and raising limbs over walk ways; roping tree limbs; using aerial bucket trucks, chainsaws, and brush chippers; and raking and cleaning debris.
Remove and plant trees by roping trees, operating machinery and vehicles, digging, staking trees, and raking and cleaning debris.
Assist other departments and maintain equipment by assisting during special events and projects, and performs preventative maintenance on all equipment.

Qualifications

Required Qualfications
Education: Ability to read and understand written instructions.
Experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience in tree maintenance; must be comfortable in bucket to heights of 20' and higher.
Other Requirements:
  • Possession of Class B CDL or the ability to obtain within 1 year;
  • Ability to obtain Incidental Line Clearance Certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights over 20' in a bucket
  • After hours on-call rotation will be required, with some weekend work.
    (City of Wilmington conducts and/or compensates for training to attain and retain certifications)

Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment used in maintaining, trimming, pruning, transplanting and removing trees.
  • Prior experience climbing, maneuvering, and working effectively in trees using rope and tree saddle.

Note: Driving and criminal history check is required for the selected candidate. Selected candidate will also be required to complete a post-offer drug screen and P.O.E.T. (Post Offer Evaluation Test).

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.

Working Conditions:
This position generally requires work outdoors and in a vehicle.

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement:
- NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.

  • Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to either the 401(k) or 457 plans regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.
Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):
- Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
- Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
- Holidays - 12 paid holidays annually
- Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).

  • Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
