Test Technician

Initiates and performs a variety of advanced test duties, operates units, gathers data, visually inspects, writes daily logs, and maintains test units and testing fixtures. Conducts initial analysis and provides findings to departmental managers and engineers for inclusion in overall test programs. Performs complex fabrications and performs advanced welding of prototype parts and test fixtures. Helps determine compliance of safety standards, performance requirements and durability parameters. Sets up and conducts advanced data acquisition and basic analysis. Performs assembly and maintenance of test units.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring safety is at the forefront of all activities performed.
  • Test and Validation
    • Personally, operates and evaluate prototype and production units in both field and laboratory conditions according to established safety, durability and performance standards.
    • Performs test requests. Gathers pertinent data on the performance of prototype and production products under prescribed field and laboratory environments.
    • Establishes thorough documentation, performs and records required maintenance on test units. Performs teardown and inspection of test units at intervals or conclusion of test.
    • Maintains thorough documentation on all test activities. Maintains daily logs on all test projects and writes summaries at required intervals.
    • Designs, construction, and development of custom test equipment and fixturing for the testing of components and entire test units.
    • Directs and helps train other technicians in testing techniques and the operation of data acquisition equipment. May be required to direct and supervise temporary employees in a field test crew.
    • Makes arrangements for testing units involving manpower, equipment test site, shipping, and travel scheduling plans.
    • Helps supervisor and management plan extensive test programs in detail covering the testing of various units, components and materials.
    • Effectively communicates with engineering, sales, marketing, production, vendors and customers as required.
    • Conducts Quality evaluations, including the setup and actual operation of production units (Quality Control – Hot Tests) and trains others.
    • Identify and apply Lean methodologies to ensure processes are scientifically controlled and continuously improved.
    • Travel up to 15% may be required.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Prototype Fabrication and Weld
    • Proficient at using advanced processes consisting of sheet metal fabrication, machining and welding to layout and fabricate prototype parts that meet acceptable accuracy levels. Use drawings, layouts, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to accomplish these tasks.
  • Thorough understanding and interpretation of engineering prints, bills of materials, and welding symbols. Knowledge and understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is required.
  • Assembles complex prototype components and/or complete machines and includes the development, fabrication and assembly of weld and assembly fixtures as required.
  • Designs and constructs specialized test fixtures and apparatuses.
  • Advanced capability of the use of lathe, band saw, drill press, mill, welder, cutting torch, plasma arc, brake press, shear, iron worker and other related equipment.
  • Obtains necessary parts from production, engineering stock, receiving or outside vendors and completes appropriate record keeping as required. Works with engineers and purchasing to coordinate prototype build for major projects.
  • Strive for an injury free workplace through a “safety first” attitude.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

All other duties are performed as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • 4-year B.S. Degree or 2-year Associates in technical or related field preferred.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of instrumentation and data acquisition including pressure, flow, and acceleration.
  • 5+ years of experience in welding, and manufacturing preferred
  • Being proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and internet use preferred

Location: 350 E 60th St. Sioux Falls SD 57104

Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm

Days of Shift: Monday-Friday
