THOR Solutions is actively seeking a mid-to-senior level Technical Writer with experience working in the marine industry to support the USCG Office of Naval Engineering in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter. The candidate must have proficiency with common productivity software, and have a strong familiarity with Coast Guard and Navy naval engineering terminology and methodology.

The candidate’s responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) performing, supporting, or supervising the following actions:

  • Drafting and/or editing a variety of documentation, including but not limited to Commandant Instructions, ALCOASTS, MOAs and MOUs, and Whitepapers.
  • Following Coast Guard approved templates and Federal style guidelines as well as work closely with CG-612 to produce standard and publishable materials.
  • Working closely with staff within CG-453 and other SMEs as appropriate to produce the desired documentation.
  • Other duties include but are not limited to:
    • Assisting with writing articles for newsletters,
    • Updating sections of SharePoint,
    • Scheduling meetings for document reviews and SME input,
    • Editing other materials for CG-453,
    • And participation in weekly meetings with CG-453.

This position is primarily onsite at the USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. However, up to 2 days/week limited local remote work is permitted after completing an orientation period.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate will:
    • Already possess an active or interim Secret (or above) clearance;
    • OR, be able to qualify for a new Secret clearance upon hire.

Required Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Technical Writing (preferred) or another relevant discipline.
    • In lieu of a relevant Bachelor’s degree, an additional three (3) years of experience may be substituted.
    • An ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Technical Writing or a comparable discipline.
  • At least three (3) years of recent, relevant experience with technical writing for U.S. Department of Defense/Navy/Coast Guard programs and systems.
    • An ideal candidate will possess at least six (6) years of highly relevant experience.
  • Overall experience should include:
    • Developing, writing, editing and assembling publications or procedures documents.
    • Developing and updating manuals, user manuals, training materials, and training databases for classroom training courses.
    • Creating and editing graphic images.
  • Proficiency with the following software or tools:
    • Microsoft Word, SharePoint, Outlook, and Teams
    • Adobe Acrobat and editing pdf files
    • CG Portal
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Typical Physical Activity:

  • This is a desk position primarily involving computer work.
