Meet the team
Our Training and Development Team plays a critical role in supporting our Field Technicians as well as our Operations partners and Center Managers. As a result, we hold ourselves to high standards and expectations. The Technical Trainer reports directly to the Manager of Process Improvement & Training. In this role, the ideal candidate will be highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, while delivering quality instruction to new Field Technicians along with experienced Field Technicians. The Technical Trainer will provide direct learning support and training delivery to our Field technicians & Utility Line Locators primarily via an online platform along with Field Training. They will create learning experiences that support our business objectives and industry standards, using a variety of learning methodologies in partnership with UtiliQuest teams including Operations, HR, Safety, Fleet, Quality, Risk Management and external Clients.

The Technical Trainer will train new hires in our Southern California Region but could support other Centers, as needed, via virtual platform. Our team is responsible for delivering a portfolio of learning programs at various stages of development in offices across North America. You will work with other learning professionals and faculty to manage all stages of program delivery of both virtual and in-person learning programs including pre, onsite and post-program management.

The day to day
Key responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver training to Live-in-Person and Web-Based audiences in a dynamic, energetic, personable, intelligent and
engaging fashion
  • Facilitates the online and in-person training program for newly hired employees and ongoing educational
needs for existing employees
  • Training delivery via Online Platform- ability to specify learning objectives and design experiences to meet
those objectives
  • Training design (utilize PowerPoint and Word)
  • Will audit work completed by newly trained technicians
  • Will support hands-on utility locate training
  • Coordinate training dates and offerings with Manager of Training
  • Remain current on existing and emerging learning methodologies and technologies
  • Work with subject matter experts and instructional design team to transform knowledge into learning solutions
  • Provide essential feedback to participants and utilize training to prepare employees for field work
  • Assist with damage investigations as needed
  • Ticket production and weekend work may be required
  • Overnight travel will be required (15-30%)
  • Mentors, evaluates, and addresses skill gaps for technicians
  • Completes Technical Proficiency Observations of field workers and recommends and conducts skill gap training
  • Complete Job Safety Observations (JSO’s ) of trainees
  • Completes other duties, as needed
Qualifications:
What do you need…?
Required skills for success:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency
  • Three (3) or more years of experience locating underground utilities and/or combination of related experience required
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and group and leadership skills
  • Demonstrates high safety standards
  • Good knowledge of industry standards/field practices
  • Able to use all current locating equipment
  • Ability to project professionalism during instruction
  • Capable of managing online classroom environments to optimize learning for all participants
  • Ability to learn new systems and software related to the role
  • Ability to assist with light technical issues and troubleshoot as needed
  • Strong understanding of Google and Office Suites and general computer knowledge
  • Ability to travel to provide field instruction 15-30% of the time

As required by California regulation, the pay scale for this position is $22- $30/hr (commensurate with experience)
