Beat the Streets – Baltimore, a nonprofit organization that uses the sport of wrestling as a way to mentor to young students, will host a five week camp for elementary, middle school and high school youthworks students. The summer camp offers amateur wrestling and STEM instruction for Baltimore City middle school students. The camp is being held in partnership with Morgan State University but will be held at a remote site in Baltimore City.
Summer Camp Mission:
The Beat the Streets-Baltimore STEM/Wrestling camp’s mission is to provide a competitive learning experience for youth in Baltimore Public Schools. The camp seeks to inspire and to prepare the next generation of youth to live healthy lifestyles, enter higher education, and to develop positive characteristics that are necessary for success in life.
Summer Camp Vision:
Our vision is to provide an enriching college experience for high and middle school student-athletes by introducing students to a mentally and physically challenging, hybrid program that combines STEM research and amateur wrestling
We inspire young innovators by offering fun, hands-on projects in various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Our program focuses primarly on Biology, Engineering, Public Health and includes activities that range from building bio-engineered prototypes and research on communicable skin infections.
The Summer Camp STEM Instructor is responsible for leading hands on activities that will encourage student interest in science, engineering and technology.
Responsibilities include teaching the assigned curriculum a, supervising campers both in and out of the classroom, organizing and leading classroom labs, and executing a finale showcasing student work at the end of camp. Instructors will also be responsible for tracking student work and handing in any deliverables to the camp coordinator. Instructors are usually year-round science teachers, or have some other significant teaching/mentoring experience in the area of science, engineering, or technology.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years' experience teaching science.
- A passion for science education.
- A calm and professional demeanor.
- Self-motivation and follow-through.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, instructors should be available and willing to assist the camp staff with active supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative tasks. Instructors should be mature, reliable, and able to work well with fellow staffers. Instructors are also expected to act as mentors, and will be asked to assist with field trips and guide students on excursions. With the support of the entire staff, instructors are responsible for the health and safety of students, in addition to fulfilling instructional objectives. This is a non-residential day camp position.
Beat the Streets Baltimore provides academic summer camps & pre-college summer programs for students entering grades 4-12. Our summer programs include amateur wrestling programs, financial literacy, college admissions prep programs, STEM camps, innovation and design, economic development, SAT/ACT Test preparation, and college tours.
