Under direction, to supervise sterile processing operations on all shifts and provide oversight of the decontamination, set assembly/preparation, and sterilization of all reusable medical equipment, surgical instrumentation, and operating room case carts.
Submission of a current certification in sterile processing techniques issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) is required.

The County of Santa Clara owns and operates a Hospitals and Clinics Delivery System that includes Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital, and St. Louise Regional Hospital.
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center - 731 bed tertiary level acute care hospital provides the highest level of adult and pediatric emergency medical and trauma services, a regional high risk Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an ACS-verified Burn Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center, a CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center, emergency and acute inpatient psychiatric services, as well as a range of other specialized services – in some cases the only such treatment in the region.

St. Louise Regional Hospital - 93 bed acute care facility, affectionately known as South County's community hospital, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, St. Louise is one of the largest employers in the community.

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
- Supervises, plans, assigns, coordinates, evaluates, and reviews the activities of assigned sterile processing staff;
Selects, trains, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff;
Monitors and manages the safe and efficient practices for decontamination, set assembly/preparation, and sterilization of all reprocessed medical instruments and equipment;
Reviews case cart requisitions for accuracy and coordinates the transfer of completed case carts to necessary areas;
Provides direct and effective supervision to ensure timely delivery of clean and/or sterile instrumentation and medical equipment;
Maintains adequate department staffing levels to ensure daily operation services to the Operating Rooms;
Monitors, maintains, and records all department quality assurance system activities in accordance with departmental and facility policies, including The Joint Commission, OSHA, and Title 22 regulations and requirements;
Collaborates with medical staff, including physicians and nurse managers, in evaluating changes to policies and procedures and implements appropriate systems to accommodate these changes;
Monitors inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies, preventing waste and controlling costs;
May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
Performs other related duties, as required.
Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent,
and
Three (3) years of full-time experience in the receiving, sorting, inspecting, cleaning, disinfecting, assembling, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing of medical/surgical supplies, instruments, and/or equipment.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a current certification in sterile processing techniques issued by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) upon appointment and maintenance of the certification for the duration of employment in this classification.
Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.
Knowledge of:
- Sterile processing processes, procedures, and technology;
Principles of infection control and aseptic technique;
Equipment used in the processes of sterilization and decontamination of reusable medical equipment;
Medical terminology;
Surgical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation;
Procedures for testing instrumentation and durable medical equipment, as well as processes and procedures for equipment and instrumentation assembly and storage;
Types and uses of detergents, enzymatics, lubricants, and environmental disinfectants;
Inventory tracking methods, recordkeeping, and report writing;
Regulatory agency mandates and guidelines including, but not limited to, OSHA, CDC, FDA, AAMI, EPA, JCAHO, and California Title XXII;
Principles and practices of supervision;
Common computer systems and applications.
Ability to:
- Analyze, interpret, apply, and adapt to applicable Federal and State rules and regulations;
Resolve sterile processing issues;
Maintain records in a hospital environment;
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
