Staff Veterinarian (F/T) Job at HSSV

HSSV Milpitas, CA 95035

$150,000 - $170,000 a year

Love animals? Want to spend your day surrounded by wagging tails and soft purrs?

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), an independent, privately funded, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has been serving people and pets in Silicon Valley for over 90 years. Having facilitated more than half a million animal adoptions, HSSV is leading the charge for animal welfare through community programs, creative marketing techniques, and effective homeless animal prevention strategies.

We are a passionate, high-performing team who believes that collaboration is key to our success. We do our best work by leveraging each other’s strengths and making sure to create opportunities for the work to be fun and meet our individual goals.

We take our mission seriously: To save and enhance lives – both two-legged and four legged! We envision a better world for animals and the people who love them, and we’re dedicated to making that vision a reality.

Overview

We are seeking an energetic and experienced Staff Veterinarian to join our shelter medical team. This role has the opportunity to impact HSSV’s mission in a variety of ways through high quality, high volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) and wellness clinics leveraging our brand new 34’ LaBoit spay/neuter vehicle, with additional duties being onsite at our Animal Community Center. The Staff Veterinarian will have the opportunity to work with different teams while providing top notch care to animals.

HQHVSN Responsibilities

Must be able to (or work up to be able to) perform 25-30+ spay/neuter surgeries per day, including pediatric spays/neuters, abdominal/inguinal cryptorchid castrations and non-routine spays. Patients are a mix of shelter, foster and privately owned cats, dogs, rabbits, and community cats through our TNR program.

Shelter Medicine Responsibilities

Practice high quality shelter medicine and surgery in our state-of-the-art medical center with high-end diagnostic capabilities including digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, ultrasound, microscopy and in-house blood chemistry and hematology equipment. Manage a varied in-house patient caseload and perform an array of non-spay/neuter surgeries including soft tissue and orthopedic procedures.

Wellness Responsibilities

Help keep pets and their families together. Provide high quality preventive and incremental veterinary care through mobile wellness and vaccination clinics for pets of people experiencing homelessness and targeted programs for various communities.

Requirements

  • Current Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and licensed to practice in CA.
  • Solid medical foundation and knowledge-base in shelter medical principles.
  • Passion for providing access to care for animals and making a difference in the community.
  • Flexibility in learning new techniques and skills to meet the growing shelter needs.
  • Proficiency in efficient spay/neuter technique.
  • Interest in dental and oral surgery (or a desire to learn) a plus.
  • Willingness to travel locally (may be multi-day clinics in the Central Valley) and work in close quarters in a mobile setting.
  • Excellent client communications and ability to adapt to different environments a must.

In addition to a variety of health, welfare, retirement, time off benefits and staff discounts, you will also receive paid CA veterinary licensure, continuing education support, annual memberships (AVMA, Association of Shelter Veterinarians and Santa Clara Valley VMA) and vin.com access.

Work Days and Hours

Hours are flexible and based on organizational needs. Because of the need to care for animals onsite 7 days a week, positions require working at least one weekend day.
