Auto Recycling Scrap Manager

The Novelis North America (NNA) team is seeking an Auto Recycling Scrap Manager. The person in this role will report to the VP Metal Procurement & Recycling. The ideal candidate will be responsible for crafting and implementing the auto scrap strategy for the NNA region in partnership with the Auto commercial team. The manager will also be responsible for providing business and market insight as they relate to automotive scrap procurement and processing; remaining connected to the voice of the customer and the business, both internal to Novelis, and within the external marketplace, as required to position Novelis as a leader in the market.

The position will work collaboratively with the Automotive Value Stream Team, Sustainability, Operations, and Supply Chain personnel to develop buying targets, and strategies to help deliver the Recycling Goals and supply needs of the business.

The position will be responsible for negotiation of pricing mechanisms to procure those units, supporting the direction and engineering of supply streams to ensure safe delivery and value to the business. Coupled together, these will assist NNA in achieving targets of the business in EBITDA, working capital, and cash flow objectives. The position will need to supervise and lead the flow of materials to optimize production of next cycle sheet ingot, SAP contract, and pricing management. This role is also responsible for developing and driving metrics and analyses as they relate to the auto scrap market to help improve performance, visibility, and understanding of the business, opportunities, and risks.

This position is also called upon to assist in, and/or lead special projects and corporate initiatives that are related to the procurement and recycling of automotive scrap into sheet ingot.
Responsibilities & Qualifications:
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Auto Value Stream and Commercial personnel to price, secure scrap, and shipping quality requirements to the ingot demand signal in support of growing our auto sales and closed loop recycling. Provide data analysis and modeling to drive optimization and improvement of metal inputs including ingot, scrap, and prime
  • Lead the setting and mentorship of buyers in setting of regional contracts for 3rd party purchases of auto scrap.
  • Development and implementation of key reporting, analyses, tools, and metrics which will provide greater the business with understanding of scrap benefits, opportunities, and risks
  • Participate in Value Stream Meetings as a voice in the value delivered from the sale of the product with a recycled metal base.
  • Support key Corporate, Regional, and Plant based initiatives as they relate to the growth of Auto Sheet
  • Provide support for Global, Regional, and local Plant initiatives sponsored by operating and financial management.
  • Run closed loop recycling (CLR) programs at the tactical level.
  • Run non closed loop recycling (CLR) deals and develop processing tollers, so the scrap arrives in the adequate form to be processed by the plant.
  • Developing and implementing the NNA Auto Scrap Recycling strategy. The aluminum auto scrap market and forward pressure on scrap are at a young and critical juncture that will determine how they are handled and moved going forward. Fully understanding the pricing and value delivered from the scrap is critical to success. Also critical is cocreating and delivering the sustainability messaging to the OEMs.
  • Collaborating with the commercial teams to ensure that scrap is secured as part of the contracting process to ensure product sustainability.
  • A key challenge going forward will be to further develop and standardize the form of the returned scrap, and quality specifications. Over time, it will be vital to procure coated / painted scrap that will need to be processed and priced accordingly. Thus, partnering with NVG on EOL scrap is also a critical part of this role.
  • Lead the development of the Auto Scrap Fact Base. Understanding the market flows and capabilities of processors, scrap tollers, and competitors is a key to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace and improve performance and profitability throughout the organization.
  • Ensure the procurement strategy and movement of scrap and third-party scrap within the marketplace and throughout the NNA system is handled and aligned with corporate strategies, commercial agreements, and Enterprise goals and objectives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, finance, engineering or a related field, MBA or MS preferred
  • 5 -10 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of market and pricing dynamics, manufacturing processes, planning, and scheduling, supply chain, recycling, quality systems, metallurgy, and basic reliability methodology.
  • Sophisticated computer application skills required.
  • Willingness to travel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a history of influencing outcomes.
  • Shown leadership skills, critical thinking and team building experience.
  • Conflict resolution skills and the ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Significant experience in managing and inspiring change; must be well networked and cultivate a participative work environment to rapidly accumulate needed information and implement change.
  • Requires the quick adjustment of new information, technology, and techniques and therefore someone who can thrive in a fast-paced action-oriented environment.
